Berkhamsted Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI v Raiders FC on Sun 01 Jun 2008 at 2:00
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 14 runs
Match report
The 2008 annual match between the Raiders and the Cricket Club was played in an excellent competitive spirit. The Raiders' bowling was opened with lively pace and was rewared with the early dismissal of Ones/Twos player Paul Langley. However this proved to be the last reward for the bowling attack as the batters then helped themselves to some rather undeserved fantasy league points. Ben Langley, Phillip Brown and Peter Dudley kept the new score board ticking over, retiring in turn (some with rather better grace than others) to engineer the champagne moment of the day. Ben Beard struck a couple of classy shots before reverse sweeping his Dad's arm ball to the 3rd man boundary - magic!
The Raiders reply was led by the Drurys, father and son, who worked the ball around, ran well and started to swing the bat with increasing ease to build a partnership of 68. However, the impetuousness of age overcame Drury senior who fell first to make the way for Paul "all sorted" Russell. The runs continued to flow, although wickets fell at regular intervals, leaving Raiders somewhat behind the required run rate. Enter Paul Beard who caused the ball to disappear to all parts generating some anxious looks from the BCC skipper. Paul Langley was reintroduced into the attack and clean bowled Beard to save face all round. At this point BCC employed their secret weapon and lit the Bar B Q wafting the scent of the Chairman's Burger'n'onion special over the field. It was too much to resist and the Raiders' last few batters were unable to overhaul the BCC total, finishing 14 runs short.
It has to be said that the Raiders undoubtedly made a a much better fist of playing cricket that the BCC did at football - obviously cancelling any football matches arranged at the first sight of dampness on the pitch...
