Bushey III v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 23 Aug 2014 at 1pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
A Watford park, no seats, a pitch with more valleys than the Chilterns and an outfield with huge boundaries cut to football pitch length. Bound to be a good game.
Pete won the toss against 5th placed Bushey and opted to bat. A shortage of top order batsmen led to Jamie stepping into the breach and he showed that he had the technique to do it. Pete and Jamie progressed the score to an admirable 64 before Jamie edged one. The next few wickets went for a single run, including Pete to a bizarre toe end of bat clip off a pull that lobbed down the leg side for the keeper to snaffle.
So suddenly we were 65-4 and after a brief resurgence from Tim and OC this became 87-6 and a low score still threatened. Cue Charlie Ormerod and Amish with a lovely partnership before Charlie succumbed to an excellent C&B taking it to 125 and from 133-9, Charlie R swung the bat to great effect to get us to a competitive 157.
The tea was OK, the Club biscuits melted and for the Bushey innings start Pete opened with Charlie and OC. The openers started steadily and got them going but Charlie and OC took one each to start to make inroads. Charlie upped the pace and took another quick couple before the 5th wicket partnership upped the ante and pushed quick runs and punished the bad ball. OC was doing a grand job tying up one end but they had taken a bit of a shine to the pacier Charlie, so it was time for a change and Amish was the man for the job. They found him difficult to get away and eventually he got past a cross-bat shot with the uneven bounce doing the batsman.
The 6th wicket carried things on and we were under pressure a little, but Amish and OC plugged away. The number 7 hoicked Amish to Matt Dight at mid wicket and next ball the number 6 was bowled also with a cross bat shot. Hat trick was missed, but Amish had done the job of cracking their chase and we plugged away at the wickets.
The 9th was the best catch this author has ever seen at 3rd XI level (and that's over a LONG time) when Garth dived to his right at backward point to lift the ball inches from the ground. Stunning.
At this point, Bushey totally sealed up and the best that OC and Charlie could throw at them over 5 overs was blocked out. A winning draw.
Fantastic team performance from everybody, batting to plan, bowling their hearts out and supporting the bowlers with tight fielding and chasing the ball all over the place over the big expanse of the pitch. A performance to remember for a long time.
The showers were cold. Nice.
