St Albans III v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 29 Aug 2015 at 1pm - limited overs (50)
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 64 runs
Match report
A very odd day. We arrived 30 minutes early only to find we were at the wrong ground. No problem, plenty time to go to the other ground just off Sandpit Lane but no postcode or directions in the league hand book resulted in us spending 30 minutes aimlessly driving around st albans in a convoy before eventually arriving about 1pm. Not ideal preparation for an important game but we won the toss and were soon out there batting. First over Jack middles a square cut and it goes flying past cover point for a certain boundary only for it to suddenly stop in the long grass which hadn't been cut in a week of rain. So began the pattern of our innings, on a 2 paced crumbling wicket the only way to score was to go aerial and then run like crazy between the wickets. No-one does this better than Brett and he was largely responsible for us posting a decent target. St Albans had a good bowling attack and despite a few other decent batting contributions for the second week running we didn't bat the 50 overs. Still, as the drizzle began to fall as we went in for tea we thought 160 was a decent total.
Tea was taken in the dressing room, and within seconds of the restart the game was embroiled in controversy, the young openers refusal to walk twice after blatant edges (he was given out the second time)leading to a very unfortunate exchange between certain members of our team and the opposition (and others) on the boundary. The skippers met in the middle to try to calm matters but despite the offer of an apology feelings were running high and continued to simmer until the end of the game, which was a shame.
In a way this overshadowed one of our better bowling efforts this season. Joe was superb, bowling accurately and quickly to remove the top order, he deserved a five-fer. Lee also bowled well and had a purple patch in the field taking 4 catches including a brilliant running effort with the ball arriving over his shoulder. St Albans no 8 was a good ball striker and he briefly threatened to put them in contention but with wickets tumbling at the other end he eventually went for one pull shot too many and that was that. After a whole season of bowling wides it was good to see us not bowling a single wide and only conceding 4 extras in total.
This result leaves us in 4th place but we have closed the gap to 10 points. Promotion is still possible but unlikely as we have rely on both the 2 teams above us losing in the final match next Saturday. And we have to win of course!
