Stevenage V v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 17 Aug 2013 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report Easily the longest trip away of the season - when we will be only having 7 away games anyway - saw us turning up at St Christopher's school in Letchworth to play Stevenage Vs.

It was obvious that Stevenage were struggling for players (they turned out to have 3 or 4 U13s playing), once I had won the toss and inserted the opposition on a day with rain forecast and looking to get a game for our players out on the field, the skipper told me that the wicket bats like a road. That's true, says Andre, I went to school here. As to how he could vouch for the pitch still being the same as in the 1940s I'm not sure.

It soon became obvious what the skipper meant. The pitch was like a trampoline for bounce and the outfield not much different. If you hit a shot well and not at a fielder then chances were that it was 4. On the other hand, we ended up with the unusual sight of bouncers in a Div 12 game.

But Hamish gave us the dream start: the skipper bowled off the first ball of the match. Josh followed up with bowling the no. 3 and both bowled really well. The other opener was keen to play his shots and used the pitch to full effect, even though a lot of shots went in the air.

Stevenage progressed apace and Hamish and Josh, after a great and unlucky spell from both, were swapped for OC and Tom. OC started horribly, short balls and full tosses all over the place, generally in the direction of the boundary. Then Tom got the opener tidily caught by Will Goodwyn at mid off and OC settled down. The fielding was top notch and committed and once the 3rd wicket went at 110 then the batting crumbled spectacularly. Tom held a good catch from a top edge running from fine leg behind the keeper; the skipper picked up a sharp one at silly mid off; Dan Macey kept his cool to effect a good run out from mid wicket and Ed Goodwyn showed his value behind the stumps with a smart stumping, as well as his chirpy encouragement for all bowlers and fielders. Josh helped finish it off taking a tidy catch at point and the batting had collapsed with the last 7 wickets going for 13 runs, a total of seven ducks on the scorecard.

A great team effort in the field, I was proud of it.

Having a stack of time to chase a paltry total on that pitch, Stevenage had no pressure to put on us and, with only slow bowlers, taking the old ball had little value with it being only about 28 overs old. Andre and Peter milked the runs from the very young bowlers until Andre went for what seemed like his umpteenth LBW of the season. Umpires have not been kind to him this year and owe him a lot of beer.

Ed came in and set about the bowling to knock the top off the chase and was disappointed and embarrassed to get out stumped charging down the pitch again.

By this time the oppo skipper was doing rain dances in the field almost begging for it to arrive, which it stubbornly refused to do.

Stephen came in and started sensibly, looking for bad balls and soon found them. 17 off an over more or less saw to it and we had plenty of time to play a hand-grenade bowler straight and boringly before Stephen hit the winning runs. He had overtaken his skipper who ended with 32 runs out of the 127 scored. Very solid ;-)
