Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Old Albanian III on Sat 04 Jul 2009 at 1:30
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
Not a country renowned for their cricket. A few clouds but warm during the “catching practice”. Only three of the opposition present when they tossed, won and elected to bat.
Ben Beard and Ian Merrett opened the bowling with Ben getting both of the openers out caught. Ian letting them have 3 whole runs off his first 5 overs; one of those was a misfield. Their number three was dropped by mids’ off and on, caught behind and didn’t walk and survived a back leg LBW shout. Goughie took Mr Lucky’s off bail and Ian bowled their number 5. Their number four was a pretty good player and scored a fairly quick 74 enjoying a good partnership with Mr Bottom Hand number six. Mikey Antonelli bowled five overs, beat the bat and had quite a few balls in the air which on another day could have gone to hand. It is never easier coming on against an established pair with a short boundary. Enter Simon Brennan who made a cameo bowling appearance and got them both out. The main man caught driving low and hard at Charlie at extra cover.
Once the partnership was broken Ben came back and quickly got into the lower order ending with a 4 wicket haul. One an excellent one handed diving catch taken by the keeper Peter. Goughie was given the honour of an over at the tail end rabbits to complete the coup de grâce. They ended up with 174 all out off 40 overs. At one point we had thought we would be chasing less, we lost impetus when their number 4 starting hitting regular fours and Charlie was getting a little tempered we could have been chasing a big target. A meritorious team talk from Ian helped switch people back on.
An excellent tea made even better with the Lions thrashing the Springbok. Peter Drury and Oli Burgess opened with a great opening partnership of 87 in 15 overs. Peter became somewhat excited by the flight of their number 4 tossing the ball up and having not learnt from the near catch went bowled behind his legs for 34. Oli who had batted very elegantly and sensibly went for a big hit to be bowled on 49. Toddy and Simon (nursing a badly blistered finger) hit a few fours but never really got into their strides and ended up getting bowled also going for the big shots. Mark Burgess steadied the ship and when joined by Ian Putman put on over 50 to get us in reach of the target. Mark fell to a very good catch having hit the previous ball for 6. Puds hit TWO sixes and played some classy shots for his 35 not out. Mikey was there at the end with 4 not out adding to his mid week maiden 60. It was good to see Ed turn up to give us a hand scoring – the good news is he does not need surgery just another 5 weeks in a hand cast.
Another good win. We had chased down their total without Alex and Tim (who still turned up after the game for a beer); with 5 wickets and twelve overs in hand. We remain second in the league. O tempora! O m(erit)ores! What times! What customs!
