Match report Again the sun shone; again Charlie won the toss; again he was heading off to Cornwall.

We elected to bat. The bowling was tight. Alex and Pete rode the storm on a sultry but lush ground in Welwyn Garden City. Alex finally got out - the first time this season. Serious grumbling and mumbling was heard from him for the rest of the day - clearly, he does not like and is not used to getting out! Pete, having seen off the new ball and having excited the fielders with a bump ball 'catch', with Simon keeping the peace, finally succumbed. The wickets then fell at regular intervals. We were looking as though we would only get a score of under 100. However, stoicism was shown and the fighting spirit of the 3rds prevailed to get us to 147 for 9 after 47. Goodwyn, Merrett and Antonelli all contributing useful runs to the cause.

Welwyn got off to a flyer - but Simon soon pegged them back. Charlie then turned to spin with Goodwyn and Antonelli and the game was turned on its head. Welwyn seemed to have no answer to the 'buffet' bowling of 'Help Yourself' Goodwyn and the precision of Antonelli. Supported again by some sharp fielding especially from Peachey, we had them at 95 for 7. The eight wicket then started to build a partnership. Then Antonelli induced a snick behind to Pete. Pete and all the BCC went up. The batsman did not walk and the umpire gave 'not out' - but we know, you know, Mr S from Welwyn. This pair took Welwyn to victory, losing only the one more wicket 4 runs short of target. Game Over.

"Courage, mes braves - l'esprit du jeu, c'est la plus important" - something Welwyn may wish to remember.
