Berkhamsted Cricket Club U14 A v Letchworth on Mon 21 Jul 2008 at 6pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won
Match report
The U14's advanced to the semi finals of the county cup (and the manager took a couple of steps closer to a pacemaker!) after a tremendous team effort brought a hard fought victory over Letchworth.
After being put into bat the home side were soon struggling, in the face of tight bowling. The top three all fell cheaply, leaving us at 13-3. The recovery was started by Luke O'Dair with a patient 27 and Julian Iacaponi, in his first match for the club. The bowling remained tight, however, and the first boundary wasn't hit until the 14th over. The lads remained calm, picking up singles before Huw Barnett hit 30 off 24 balls and Jack Furlong 12 not out of 10 balls to help us reach 106-8 from our 20 overs.
Letchworth started very well with some unusually wayward bowling helping their cause. The introduction of Huw Barnett stemmed the flow of runs as he struck with his first ball and took another in his second over. At the half way stage Letchworth were still firm favourites at 53-2. An inspired bowling change helped swing the match in Berko's favour as Mike Antonelli brought himself on and struck with his first two balls. In the next over Barnett took 3 more wickets, finishing with hugely impressive figures of 5-16. Letchworth hung on until the last over when Ben Beard took the last 3 wickets, becoming the 3rd bowler to get himself on to a hat-trick, as Letchworth's last 7 men all managed to get ducks (Is this a record?).
Berko ran out winners by 28 runs, but the result was an awful lot closer than it looks on paper.
Congratulations to the whole team for a fantastic effort. The fielding was excellent, as was Mike Antonelli's captaincy. Each and every one contributed to the victory and the fantastic season the team has enjoyed. Thanks also to the enthusiastic crowd who gave such good support.
Look forward to seeing you for the semi on Sunday.
