Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 13A v Chorleywood on Thu 27 Apr 2017 at 530pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won 76 runs
Match report
First match of the season and typically cold and wet, perfect for early season cricket!
However, the miserable conditions did not dampen the spirits of the enthusiastic group of boys who set about their task warming up in the drizzle. We were put in to bat by CW and Doe and Todd set about the opposition bowlers from the first over, concentration, shot selection as well as calling and running were as good as I have seen from the opening pair and they put on 66 before Todd fell in the 9th over. Doe retired shortly after but no respite for CW though, newcomer Tom Alexander and captain Hubbard took over with Alexander particular brutal smashing 33 of 18 balls to keep the score climbing. Stanford and Harry Oldham applied the finishing touches and we ended on 139/4, an imposing total from a shortened 18 overs.
The CW openers looked bright for the first few balls, however Kapadia quickly extinguished hope taking out 2 of their top 3 in the second over, 1 to a fantastic catch from Alexander. Opening bowlers Pemberton and Kapadia then put the pressure on with tight, aggressive bowling leading to the last of the top 3 falling to Kapadia in his second over. First rotation bowlers Stanford and MacKay then took over and proceeded to remove the CW middle order after some dogged resistance in the increasing gloom. As the drizzle restarted and the temperature dropped, captain Hubbard turned to Ben Oldham for spin to give the lower order something else to think about. He was richly rewarded with 2 wickets in the first over, both catches, one for Ben himself and another from Alexander rounding off a debut to remember. CW managed to just hang on for their 18 overs ending on 63/9.
All in all a very satisfying start with contributions from the whole team. Particularly pleasing was the spirit shown in the field right until the freezing, damp and dark end.
MOM: Adam Kapadia for decapitating the CW batting order.
Best moment: Tom Alexander for the catches (as well as brutal hitting).
