Berkhamsted Cricket Club 2nd XI v Sawbridgeworth III on Sat 09 Aug 2014 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 18 runs
Match report
The day didn't start well. No match balls, no bails, stumps mysteriously on the wrong pitch and the skipper with a raging tooth absess. As we were getting the rope out Jamie turned up looking green after a visit to Jagerbomb world the night before. Mark won the toss and decided to bat against a young Sawbo attack. As usual when we have a strong batting line up we made a right pigs ear of it, the opener removing the first 3 in a good spell and then the young spinner who was bowling ok but took his wickets with a mixture of long hops and full tosses. Jamie battled through his hangover for 23 off 24 overs before being caught and George was unlucky to go to a bump ball from a chap with a very dodgy action and suddenly we were 67-6. Nick counterattacked hitting several boundaries before he and Romit perished to the spinner in quick succession. Joe came in and hit some fantastic straight drives including one huge six and looked good for a 50 before getting an absolute brute of a lifter. Mark and Toby then added 20 vital runs for the last wicket to get us up to 168, well below par we thought as we went in for tea.
Our openers Joe and Toby got off to a fabulous start removing the first 4 batters for just 25. Then full credit to Sawbo's 5 and 6 who defended well at first and then punished anything short or overpitched in a defiant partnership of 80. Just as the game seemed to be slipping away from us Mark brought back Joe to remove both batters with fine deliveries and with Toby also coming back on the tail was quickly wrapped up with good catches from Jamie, George, Nick and Ethan. A top class performance by our opening bowlers who persistently attacked the stumps and made the batsmen play.
This win puts us back in contention for promotion and next week we go to league leaders Broxbourne who are unbeaten this season.
