Rickmansworth IV v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 07 Sep 2013 at 12.30pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 56 runs
Match report
And so to the last league game of the season. We were already firmly cemented mid-table, so it's all about the game in hand with Rickmansworth desperate for a win to have any hope of preventing relegation.
Having had some drizzle beforehand the skippers surveyed a damp pitch with it decidedly soggy at one end but we were assured that it will "play fine". 3 attempts at a toss where Peter forgot to call the first time and the oppo skipper made a hash of throwing the coin the 2nd showed it was end of term and eventually they won the toss and inserted us to bat.
Tim and Andre started positively, but the dodgy bounce of the dry end was shown up when Andre tried a pull and it lifted and took a top edge into his mouth. Peter came on for his retirement injured for repairs and Tim went soon after to a very neat catch in the gully off an edged drive that looked like it was going to get away with it.
That brought in Nick and with Peter doggedly looking to keep out the various lifters and shooters at one end and the slow low ones at the damp end, Nick made it look easy with hard hit straight shots off any bad balls. He raced to his 50 in no time with Peter having around a dozen and looked good for a lot more when losing concentration and playing across a straight one.
Peter was finally getting himself in and ratcheted up his scoring rate while looking to keep an end tight as wickets ticked away at the other end. He was finally out in the the 43rd over for 74 and the tail had the opportunity for some good fun throwing the bat at the last few overs and scrambling good bonus runs. 197 the target.
Andre came back out at the fall of the 6th wicket and admitted later that the only reason he did was because he could see Peter beating his season tally of runs. Peter ended up beating it by just 2 runs - 393 to Andre's 391.
The old ball was thrown to Charlie and Jamie and Charlie charged in with good aggression bowling at the end with variable bounce while Jamie spun heavily and accurately at the other end. The pressure was telling early, with Rickmansworth needing to go for it and Charlie got a good LBW and Jamie a good catch in the deep by Rob.
From here, it was the Charlie Richardson show as he charged in fast and made life uncomfortable for the batsmen. They never looked like getting near the total as Charlie dismanted them wth a 7 wicket haul and the highlight was everyone going up for a catch behind where the umpire didn't give it and then Charlie bulling in next ball to york the batsman leg stump.
Finally, with the 9th wickeet partnership looking a bit stubborn and Chrlie starting to tire, Peter brought himself on (captain's privilege!) and on his 4th ball bowled the aggressive no. 6 who played his shot about 3 seconds too early across the line. We had to check that the bails had come off, it had got through so slowly. Next ball, the number 11 slogged to deep mid on where Jamie took a fantastic catch. Pete's on a hat trick first ball next season!
A great way to finish off the season and lots of positives from the performances this year. Looking forward to next year and the newly regionalised divisions already......
