Old Albanian III v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 18 May 2013 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 48 runs
Match report
Once we'd managed to find the changing rooms in the labyrinth that is the Old Albanian's clubhouse, an enthusiastic bunch of youngsters and oldsters (as somebody drily noted in a club tweet, there was no-one in the team aged between 16 and 45) took to the field and after winning the toss we opted to bat.
The pitch was quickly confirmed as low and slow and Pete and Andre ground along to a 49 partnership that took in 19 overs before Pete was LBW. The score gradually picked up pace from snail to tortoise and Andre fought well for his 38 as well as a chip in of 21 from Tony Francis with a few blows at the end lifting us to 146-6 from our 47 overs.
With no-one above slow bowler in the team, we opted to keep the old ball throughout the OA innings and opened with Pete and Ian C. OA struggled and quickly lost a few and the wickets ticked over, with Ian the pick of the bowling. The pick of the early wickets was the first where an aggressive opener hit Pete for 4 then eyed the next one for the same, changed his mind to defensive as it floated in and then a 3rd time to try to do something with it and edge it into the wicket. I tell you, he had plenty of time for all 3 options.
Pete was swapped for the excellent young Jamie Slater who always threatened and bowled the rest of the innings from that end. He picked up a really good caught and bowled, Ian had a C&B too, and other than a good smart square leg catch from Julian, the rest were all comprehensively bowled.
A stubborn 7th wicket partnership from Hassan and Creswell threatened to save a draw for OA and maybe even give the chance of a win, but once the breakthrough was made we quickly got to the last man and Jamie deservedly claimed the last wicket bowling Hassan off the inside edge for glory with 3.4 overs left.
Well done to all. Dan Macey bowled a few good overs to add to the performance and Harry Hunter looked good for his one maiden at the end.
OC took 5-25, Jamie 3-30 and Pete 2-22
