Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI v Northwood Town on Sat 31 Aug 2013 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 30 runs

Match report In seeing off Broxbourne the previous match, spirits were high going into this Saturday's clash with Northwood Town. With Hertingfordbury playing 3rd in the league the calculators were out to work out how many points we needed to secure our place in div 4 for 2014. 24 points from the last two games would be enough assuming results went against us. In the end we won, maintaining our position in the lucrative Herts Div 4 league with its increased TV rights money which we will look to spend on strengthening the squad in the all important transfer window.

With such an important game the skipper assumed all players would be present and correct at the meet time. Lesson 1 of the Art of Berko captaincy - Never assume anything. Doug rode in on his bike 1 minute late straight into the midfield general role of the customary warm up game of footie. Ben turned up 5 mins late claiming he was on time while Ollie arrived post this following a mass search exercise in Waitrose for his son's toy giraffe.

Lesson 2 - The colour of the Berko wicket does not correspond to how it will play. I know this and elected to bat upon winning the toss. Out went our latest opening partnership on what we all thought was a normal day. But this was no ordinary day. This was a special day. In Jewish culture they call it a bar mitzvah, the celebration of when a boy becomes a man (and gets a bit of his todger lobbed off). Saturday 31st August was Joycey's bar mitzvah. So many times he has batted like something resembling a Greek God before falling off Mount Olympus at the sight of a spinner (normally when he is on 60). Saturday was the day he stood up to all those spinners that had bullied him over the years and declared "You shall not get me out today." And they didn't, or Doug for that matter. Doug scored a patient 68 but it was Joycey who took his sword and shield into battle to fight through with a magnificent 125. His first ever ton. The pair broke all many of records with their 170 run opening partnership.

So with the platform set, it was time for the captain to start thinking about a declaration which worried me somewhat given his lack of practice at it this season. Ollie played a swoosh buckling cameo while Jez looked to protect his average. In the end we declared to set them 261 to win in 50 overs.

Darren must have been impressed with our batting display this week as he produced some warm mini sausages at tea as a reward.

We got off to a great start when Will had their opener well caught by Jamie at point. The ball went like a tracer bullet and Tinkerbell had to go horizontal to catch it. But then it became harder. Northwood were finding scoring easy and were going along at the required run rate. After Ethan managed to get their other opener caught behind it brought in the opposition captain. He forged an important partnership with their very assured looking number three. The game was slowly slipping away from us.

Suddenly we were giving a life line when the No 3 lobbed up a catch to Will trying to force the pace. Riaz then caught their captain off his own bowling with a sharp effort. With 2 new batsman in, keeping up with the run rate was always going to be tough and it showed as wickets started to tumble as the pressure built. Riaz got better during his spell once he changed the positioning of his front foot to land outside of the foot hole. He picked up 4 wickets and was ably assisted by Josh who bowled well in his second spell to clean up the tail.

Another great win. It just proves that we are indeed a good team when we perform. Man of the match goes to Joycey for a fantastic hundred.
