Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI v Ivinghoe & Pitstone on Wed 16 May 2012 at 6pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 37 runs
Match report
Highlights of the match, excellent bowling by the colts especially Will Steed taking 5 wickets
Doug Foster 50 runs in 22 balls.
Having lost out first league game of the season attentions turned to the mid-week Gazette Cup. Playing the self described “(Come on the) Village” of Ivinghoe & Pitstone, optimism was high that we could record the first win of the season. The skipper won the toss on a pitch which looked seamer friendly but with a strong batting line up to come he was confident to bat first. The decision looked horrendous as we lost Lee, Hamish, Gus and the skipper in short order. Indeed the thoughts from the captain as he made his way back to the pavilion that maybe he had made a mistake was backed-up by the ironic statement “Good toss to win” from their comedian in the covers.
At this point with the score 18-4, the opposition were rightly in high spirits. The crowd that had made the trip over the Beacon were already relaying the score via mobile back to the guys at home who couldn’t get a ticket. However the thoughts of tomorrow’s headlines in the Sun of “Ivinghoe thrash Berkhamsted in David vs Goliath encounter” seemed to spur the home side on. Debutant James Wyatt calmed fears with an assured knock of 40 runs, starting slowly but then taking advantage of the bowling change to despatch a couple of balls into the field next door. A very good innings which paved the foundations.
Next up enter Sir Douglas of the Foster. In a canny move by the skipper to bulk up the lower order Doug came in at no 7 (It wasn’t because he was late.....honest). Doug scampered some early ones and twos before taking advantage of the short leg side boundary to step across his stumps and smash a number of sixes. He ended up on 50 and Berkhamsted finished with a very competitive total of 132. Especially given the position we had been in.
Ben and Hamish opened the bowling and immediately kept the advantage with the home side. Ben bowled a great line and length and was unlucky to not to picked up more wickets with two dropped catches of his bowling for the second game in a row (we must work on fielding at the next training session). With the opposition starting to play more aggressive shots the ball was thrown to Will Steed to see if his extra pace and bounce could deliver wickets. Will took the responsibility like James Anderson leading the England attack and bowled a blistering spell which ripped the heart out of the oppositions’ middle order. With figures of 5-0-22-5 this match winning performance from the young man will live long in the memory with the capacity crowd. No doubt the IPL franchise owners will take note. Gus “Ajmal” Schaw also deserves a mention for bowling a great spell of off-spin with more variety than Heinz.
So a good performance from the home side against an opposition containing some good players. Hopefully that will give us the confidence to deliver this Saturday when the league continues.
