Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI v Watton-at-Stone on Sat 19 May 2012 at 1.00pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
After the exploits in the cup competition it was back to the league hoping to rebound after the disappointment of last week. As usual the skipper went out and duly lost the toss. The opposition captain looked at the wicket, scratched his head and inserted the home side. He also enquired what our skipper would have done to which I replied “I would have bowled first an’ all.” Hindsight shows that we both clearly can’t read a pitch. If only we had Boycott and his keys there to guide us.
Lee opened up in his usual cautious way and was unlucky to be removed by a great catch at point. However Gus and Jez continued on with the scoring rate and batted well until Gus was given out BBW (Bat Before Wicket). That is a new one on me and I will be checking the laws with the MCC if this is a legitimate dismissal. Anyway it brought Cool Hand Luke to the wicket and he and Jez proceeded to take the Watton-at-Stone bowling to the Berkhamsted Johnson Dry Cleaners. Jez was out for a majestic 75 and Luke was unfortunately to miss out on a fantastic maiden 1st XI ton after being bowled for 98. A superb batting display all round from the home side except the skipper who got the only ball of the day that swung in, moved away and took the edge which the keeper snapped up after shelling everything for the previous 40 overs. Either that or I played down the wrong line. Again.
So an imposing 284 was set from 50 overs although with the short leg side boundary, curtsey of the bottomless puddle, it was certainly something the opposition could have a crack at. Ben opened up and immediately took a wicket. Plain sailing from here we all thought. Unfortunately not. Wickets were hard to come by so the skipper turned to the spin twins of Dight and Schaw. The ever aggressive Dight proceeded to take out his frustration of not getting a wicket first ball by shoulder barging the non-striker second ball. A funny incident that led to two over 50s squaring up to each. Micky the ever so respected boxing ref stepped in to calm things down and the extra adrenaline clearly helped as Dighty bowled a good spell and finishing with 3 for 31. Sam also bowled well at the end and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket.
Unfortunately we couldn’t finish the opposition off and they finished 190/6 after never really attempting the win. 16 points to 6 was the way the scoring panel adjudicated it. A unanimous win in boxing but an honourable draw in cricket. After batting well it was disappointing not to get a win with some catches just falling short of fielders. Somedays those go to hand but it just wasn’t meant to be on Saturday.
Next up a challenging trip up to Hertford but many positives to take out of the game.
