Match report
Saracens League Div 9 Elstree v Berko 3rds 30/7/11
After 6 weeks of tropical downpours curtailing our games it was refreshing to be driving to a game in blazing sunshine. This feeling wasn’t dampened by the skipper getting lost en route but once all 11 players had arrived and taken in, what an estate agent would describe as bijou, ground and somewhat weary clubhouse we looked forward to Skipper Hussey winning the toss and batting first.
Unfortunately Charlie had left his double sided coin at home and we were staring down both barrels of 53 overs fielding. With three recognised bowlers. Nevermind. Martin Gough, Josh Roberts and Ethan Mackie rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in. After two overs with 22 on the board it looked like it could be a coconut shy on the boundary, three quick wickets later and the hosts were in a spot of trouble but then the game swung away from us. Loose balls were despatched and good balls were slogged. Gough bowled tirelessly through the innings finishing with 5 well deserved wickets.Alas they came at the cost of 101 runs which had Gough on the phone to a forensic scoring accountant during the tea interval. Youngsters Roberts and Mackie both continued to demonstrate the hard work of the Berkhamsted Colts section is not going unrewarded. When Mackie began to flag Chaz Holliday stepped up to send down several overs of perfectly respectable seam.
The hosts eventually declared on 251-8 giving us 50 over to chase. Dudley and Hardwicke opened and both went early in different unlucky ways. Pete was trying to decide how far over the mid wicket hedge he should put the ball as the rank long hop shot through over his shoe laces and bowled him. Alex then was given out caught despite not touching it – umpire Wilson could only give like he saw it…Then Larry Eaton and Aaron Todd got stuck in and stuck down. Todd in particular trying his best to find new ways to play and miss and getting increasingly exasperated at the unpredictable bounce. With Todd’s dismissal followed quickly by Putman and Larry we were then treated to an Ali Wilson 50 with shots all round the ground. However, with overs running out Ali ran out of time and when he was out after being tempted to try and hit the ball into Watford. The Skipper strode to the crease to join Chaz Holliday. With only Gough left to bat the headliner writers were wondering how to write about a Berko collapse once again.
Every now and then sport has a way of reminding you of life’s limitless ways of surprising you. Hussey, greying hair flapping in the hot Elstree breeze like a mature shampoo model, entered the crease like a World War Two General who’d been asked to demonstrate the art of bayonetting to his naïve troops down in the trenches. Spurning the actual effort of running Hussey saw out the remaining overs (excellently supported by Chaz) with the calm and contempt of someone who had far more important matters to attend to. Number 11 Gough was easily the most relieved man in the ground. A fighting draw was a good result on a hot day in a desolate part of the world. The Berkhamsted revival continues.
