Welwyn Garden City IV v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 10 Jul 2010 at 13:00
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 59 runs
Match report
Berkhamsted III’s vs Welwyn Garden City IV 10th July 2010
Stifling hot, madcap journey to a school opposite their main ground to play on an artificial wicket with a school girl boundary. Charlie lost the toss and we were asked to bowl. After three overs their opener departed on 22 with a good catch by Ian on the boundary. Prior to that it seemed hitting the ball resulted in a 4 or 6. Luke continued to have plenty find the edge. Ben replaced him and with his whippy bounce had the opposition unnerved. Tim in slip and Mark in gully had some veritable catching practice. The score was reined back in to around 43 off 7 to 133 for 8 off about 30. These figures are vague as yet again nobody bothered to write our score book up properly.
Thinking the game was nearly wrapped up the acclimatised Goughie was brought on for some cheap wickets. But their number 6 and number 10 had different ideas tonking Goughie for nearly 50 in 7 shambolic overs. Ian returned and bowled the number 6 and Ben completed his Michelle with the number 10, having scored 62, walking with a good catch behind to the now keeping Mark. Their total 225 off 51 and a bit overs.
A long walk to their main ground for a very average tea. Highlights being the eye candy and the legendary Aussie paceman Thommo watching their game. After the trudge back, retrieving kit from the lorry container and further girls changing room action we resumed the game. Alex smacked the first ball for 4 and the 225 on a postage stamp sized pitch looked signed, sealed and delivered. Alas counting chickens - in overs 7-9 the egg basket hit the ground and the game was sacrificed. Mark caught behind, Alex bowled, Puds LBW and new find Mike bowled leaving us 39 for 4. Tim and Luke rallied before Tim went for 32. Ben joined Luke and the pair had a good partnership making the maximum batting points total of 200 look achievable even if the win unlikely. Six hitter Ben went for 30 and Luke for 36. Ian hit a few, Charlie didn’t trouble the scorers and the task left for Goughie and Jon was to get some more batting points in the 5 remaining overs. Their opening bowling was too good and collected an excellent 6-29 off 10.3 overs leaving us all out for 166.
A loss which was not that enjoyable. Man of the match for us was Ben with 5 for 15 and 30 runs. For them it would be a little contentious, 6 wickets has to be better than 62 runs but if their number 10 had gone for 5 no doubt we would have knocked off 150. It seems the barmy weather produced some oddities, League leaders Boxmoor lost to 19th placed Sandridge, albeit by 5 runs chasing. We are 4th 11 points behind Boxmoor. What is a little disconcerting is that there is only a 32 point spread between the top 12 teams with 8 games left. Next week we have Great Gaddesden who are 2 points ahead of us in 3rd place.
