Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Baldock II on Sat 08 May 2010 at 13:00
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
Berkhamsted III’s vs Baldock II’s 8th May 2010
Fundamentally it was cold – 6 degrees Celsius cold. Parliament was not so well hung and questions were asked as to how Brown managed to get in without being voted for and now we have voted him out still maintains squatter’s rights. The boys from Bad Rock arrived late after road closures on the High Street. Charlie won the toss and put them in.
It was also windy – a north-easterly bringing extra cold air and probably volcanic ash. Those suitably dressed all donned the new clima-cool shirts, all our other shirts and jumpers and headed out to the Siberian tundra. Ian Merrett and new boy Chris Stone opened the bowling with maidens. Ian struck in the 5th, Chris in the 12th it remained cold. Interesting their somewhat slow opener slipped on the wet pitch and called for a runner. Usain Bolt, or should that be Baltic to match the prevailing weather conditions, came out to practice for the bob sleigh and some rapid Cool Runnings. It is fair to say a couple of their batsmen could have done with having a look first but with a slow run rate thought it made sense to speed it up immediately. Sadly their egos were writing cheques their batting ability couldn’t cash against the mighty Merrett. His six wickets put the rest of our bowling attack in the shade – well it would have done had there been any sun. Goughie’s belt was the only rainbow seen on the day. A few chances went down, the slips were a bit deep to bouncy Ben Beard who initially was bowling a bit short but was unlikely to end wicketless. Uncharacteristically Tim Buckley spilled one in the slips and Chris, even after three attempts, dropped one at wide mid-on. Cold hands didn’t help.
It started drizzling, not hard enough to send us all scampering to the clubhouse, just Aaron who had to return to the dressing room to add additional layers. The cold, the wind chill and now the precipitation was enough to make for inclement cricket conditions. With the ball suitably sodden, soft and slippery it was time for the old timers to bowl. This coincidentally coincided with a run fest for the opposition. It was clear the team was not batting in order of talent! In fact their 7 and 9 played to their strengths – hitting hard through the line and riding their luck. The very rusty Goughie took some slog but chucking up full tosses was asking for it. One of the sixes could have been a catch but hotly tipped to take it Ben tipped it over. Goughie finally hit the pitch, elected to just vary his flight and the last three soon departed. ABC 123 all out in 37.4 overs wasn’t BAD but at 52 for 7 wasn’t a great finish.
Finally some warmth with a very good tea. Umpire Mickey blue face (it was cold) ushered everyone back out into the bleak. Aaron and Mark Burgess opened and didn’t appear to be in much trouble. A big swing to a straight one bowled the Toddmeister for 10 – playing in the dark with sunglasses on may not help. Enter Tim Buckley who played a lot of elegant leg glances. Mark kept the score board ticking with plenty of boundaries putting on 52 out of 79 before a lavish and with the benefit of hindsight, over exuberant swing at a straight one. Ian Putman came in and entered an interesting side game with Tim to see if they could run each other out. Their calling, when it occurred, had like the weather polar extremes. But they did a good job to see us home in 30 overs with 32 to spare.
Another resounding victory and keeps us top of the league with Watton-at-Stone and Kings Langley on maximum points. Man of the match – Ian for his 6 for but Mark’s fifty and catch put him in hot running contention. Keep the Quattro fired up we want the ashes.
