Welwyn Garden City III v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 14 May 2022 at 12pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
The 2XI turned up in Welwyn Garden City to what looked to be the flattest deck in the league with clear blue sky, the sun shining and no breeze. The oppo, already depleted to 10 men, were clearly in agreement that the obvious decision was to bat first. This could only ever mean that after overthinking the science behind the coin toss, the skipper swiftly called tails incorrectly and Berko were stuck in the field… standard.
The under 15 prospect Mukamil along with debutant Chris Wilcox got the 2s off to a flying start, with neither opening bat looking in danger of middling anything. This trend continued, with both ending with very respectable figures of 0-12 (10) and 0-14(9) respectively, but unfortunately lacking what would’ve been well deserved wickets.
It was then time to bring the abundance of spin (and slates) to bare against the set, but not threatening, opening batting pair. With the run rate struggling to stay above 2 per over, it became clear to both sides that the track was not as it seemed, with a few rogue bounces and varying pace spicing up the first innings. Alex soon found out that getting your body behind it was a dangerous tactic after narrowly avoiding a mouthful of leather at mid on.
However, it wasn’t long before a breakthrough was made and the wickets continued to fall, with 3 each for Slates and Lewarne, 2 for Klosterman and 1 for DT, and the oppo all out for 132.
It was then the turn of Berko to navigate the unpredictable Welwyn track. The first wicket soon fell with Jacob Lewarne losing his off stump to a pretty unplayable Yorker, but Todd stuck around with Langridge to give us a solid base.
Contributions were made throughout the order, with each batsman after the first wicket making above 20 before giving the oppo some soft catching practice. With under 20 required, Mukamil approached the crease and took guard. With a few hefty blows, 16 runs from 6 balls, and 2 of the biggest maximums of the day to the longest boundary (which Todd, Slates and Lake failed to reach on the full - get in the gym), Berko were home safe, chasing down Welwyn’s first innings total in 32 overs for the loss of 5 wickets. It was back to the club for beers and a BBQ to celebrate, with the 2s now at the top of the table. But with next weeks’ fixture seeing a showdown between the equal-in-points first and second place, it is a must win fixture if Berko are to remain on top…
