Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Preston IV on Sat 22 Jun 2013 at 1pm
Match was Drawn

Match report Where to start on this one? Not a day to be a captain. We arrived at the ground looking forward to playing on the main square only to find it soaked and muddy. With more rain forecast for the afternoon chances of play looked doubtful but following a UN style negotiation involving OC, 4 skippers, the tea lady, Greg and Henry Kissinger we somehow ended up playing on the top square which by 220pm had remarkably dried out.

Mark won the toss and inserted Preston to bat - their skipper looked remarkably cheerful about this for a team that has been bowled out for less than 60 twice this season and no small wonder as Viv Richards strolled out to bat. Well of course, it wasn't the great swaggerer himself but a reasonably good impersonator who enjoyed telling us he had no idea who his team mates were and that they had found him in the pub on Thursday night. Whatever, he was a bloody good batsman (at least div 4 standard) and he quickly put us to the sword with a rapid half century. Sadly our bowling was also well below par and serving up a recipe of long hops and full tosses was only ever going to result in us chasing too many runs. There was one ray of sunshine in the bowling of U15 colt Josh Peacock who bowled with pace and movement and deservedly got out the opener caught on the boundary by Rob. Rob also bowled a quick spell and was unfortunate that the opposition umpire thought everything just outside off stump was a wide. After fielding so well so far this year it was a shame to see 5 catches and 2 runs outs missed which could have made our task easier.

We went in for tea.... actually we had cancelled tea so after a raid on the bar for coke and chocolate we went out to bat needing just under 6 an over. Despite Andre looking in fine form wickets fell steadily against frankly unspectacular bowling and once Andre had gone for a jug-avoiding 49 we never looked like chasing down the total. Mark hit 3 fours in one over and then perished going for an even bigger hit, Hamish bulleted one at Sir Viv who made no mistake with a stunning catch and we had a worrying moment when Jamie was caught off the glove with 2 balls to go but Jacob is a good man for a crisis and he safely blocked out for a draw.

A quick whip round in the bar produced 6 giant takeaway pizzas (thanks Greg) and despite a disappointing result in terms of points we had at least got a game in and the rain had remarkably missed us all afternoon.
