Harpenden VII v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 5th XI on Sat 27 May 2023 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 267 runs
Match report
A lovely day in Harpenden - bright blue skies and sunshine. Both captains agreed we would bat first and there was no sign of the carnage to come when we lost a couple of early wickets to Harpendens wily left arm veteran seamer, followed by an unfortunate run out. Once Luca arrived at the crease runs started to flow quickly and at drinks he was already on 76 not out with a century looking inevitable. Sadly he then holed out and with Hunmbal pulling a muscle we then had a lively partnership between Barney and Joe - and when they both got out in quick succession Tom and Richard went ballistic and took 145 off the last 12 overs. All helped by an enormous 46 wides. Cant remember the last time a Berko team scored 300?
To be fair to Harpenden this was their 7th team which is amazing - but some of their batters looked very inexperienced. There were a couple of poor run outs where the ball was hit straight to a fielder and then the highlight of our bowling was a superb hat trick by 14 year old Barney Lee - first bowled, second C&B and then the third plumb LBW, a wonderful moment for him. Their last pair put up some stubborn resistance with their young no 5 Harry deservedly going on to complete a fine undefeated 50.
As always with 5th team cricket there were some gold comedy moments the highlight of which must have been one of Harpenden's fielders retrieving the ball from the edge of a bush only to then throw the ball backwards deep into the same bush. Hopefully as the season progresses we can get some more 5s games in.
