Northampton Exiles III v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 08 Aug 2009 at 1:30
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report Another long journey past at least twenty more local cricket grounds to end up well past Cockfosters. It could have been closer had they not been exiled. Charlie won the toss and put them in. First over from Bart Smith a quick single was taken and then the other opener smacked his first ball for a six over mid wicket, albeit a short boundary. Ten off the first over and with Ned Kilgannon having a problem with his radar in his first over it looked like we could be chasing a big score.

Things settled. Barty had the slasher caught by keeper Mark Burgess in his fourth over without too much further damage. Ned relaxed into a good spell and took the other opener caught Barty at point in his fifth. The next two hung around for ten overs although Barty had the number 3 caught by Mark when he was on 10. Sadly despite an 11 man appeal he was not given and didn’t walk –spirit of cricket and all that. According to their umpire the sound came after the ball passed the bat. This is a simple rule of physics – light travels quicker than sound. Goughie replaced Ned and had some edges before the number 4 was well stumped by Mark. Little happened for another 12 overs apart from dropping the number 3 twice as he made his way up to an irksome 41. Charlie changed Goughie’s end to get Mikey Antonelli on. First over at the other end had the number 3 caught by Mark again and this time although not prepared to walk he was given out, possibly because Goughie bowls slower. From 90 for 3 they managed in 9 overs to disintegrate to 103 all out – just beating England’s first innings performance.

An excellent short spell from Mikey and it was great to see him pick a four for not many. Goughie didn’t even mind it denied him his Michelle (Pfeiffer) although obviously Mikey is in his fantasy league team. Highlights of this Englandesque collapse. Goughie took 3 wickets in 4 balls. Barty turning a straightforward catch at mid on into a stunning backward dive and a superb Sherjesque one hander. Charlie was given the opportunity to do the same but semi pulled out (catchus interruptus?) over sun concerns and the fact he thought Barty was trying to outdo his previous effort going for a forward-double-piked-tumble-half-screw-pirouette-sauté behind him. The unfortunate pas de deux injured the end of Charlie’s finger more than his pride.

A very good tea, although for a Sri Lankan team we thought the actual brew could have been better, the chocolate cake was lovely. Tim Buckley and Simon Brennan opened the batting to put on 28 in the first 12 overs. The opening bowlers were not easy to put away and it looked like it could just take a while. Tim took a big swing at a short ball that didn’t seem to bounce and bowled him. Ian Putman came out and played a beautiful square drive which deserved four twice over but it only got 3 on a long boundary. Then it all went a bit Weeble wobbly for a bit. Ian had a slash and edged to the keeper – he duly walked. Simon played across another straight one to be bowled for what had been a good 22. Ollie Burgess looked like he could have benefited from a few throw downs before he came out to bat. It was a good ball to get first up but appearing to have his shoelaces tied together didn’t help him get over the crease to be yorked. Toddy then seemed frustrated not to be off the mark and took a big swing to also edge to the keeper – true to the spirit he too duly walked.

From 39 for 1 we were 39 for 5 after 20 overs. Goughie even had to come off from umpiring to get his pads as Charlie’s injury demoted him to Goughie’s usual onze position. Ned then played a top knock in the circumstances putting on 28 before he holed out to a very good catch at long on with the game safe. Mark followed his excellent spell behind the stumps (3 catches and 2 stumpings) with 35 not out. His last over smacking their returning opener for 6, 4 and 4.

A win by 4 wickets with 14 overs to spare. You have to question why the opening bowlers were not left on because choking the runs would have built the pressure. The change bowlers went for 26 in 6 overs and certainly got Ned and Mark’s eyes in. Good to see that the team has the confidence to win even when it looks like it may be going a bit Pete Tong. We wobbled but certainly won’t be going down. We remain 20 points behind league leaders Pirton ruing the two rained off games including last week’s match against Pirton.
