Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
There had been some early morning rain, the sky was cloudy, half the opposition were running late and a stand in won their toss and elected to put us in. Alex Hardwicke and Peter Drury started us off with a steady 13 in the first four overs. Peter then followed a wide one and edged to first slip. Tim Buckley and Alex then continued their season success putting on a 142 partnership with Alex reaching his second century of the season. Alex finally succumbed on 101 in the 32nd over with the score on 158. Having now scored a most impressive 337 runs in 5 innings Alex must be in an elite club of batsmen to score 101 and reduce his average by soixante huit!
The gathering clouds appeared more menacing than the pitch and opposition bowling. Tim went on to complete his third 50 in his fourth innings of the season. Ian Putman played some decent shots to help take the score onto 187 in the 37th over before Tim was caught at mid off. Nick another member from the pod of Wales to breech into the thirds was in name best placed to enjoy the ensuing light precipitation and went in next. Nick helped keep the scoreboard rattling before Puds was out caught and bowled in the 40th to make room for Toddy. Boom, boom, boom - four, two, six and Charlie called them in with a total of 215 off 41 overs – yes 41 overs. This is a key point as Tim had put forward the hypothesis that we needed more than 220 off at least 42 overs before declaring.
Another excellent tea and then some tedium. Ian Merrett finally had the opener caught by the keeper for 76 in the 32nd over with the total 132. Nick bowled the other opener for 55 in the 41st over with the total on 158. A bit of discussion followed with us thinking they had 48 and them proving they had 49 overs. The game became rather more interesting. A run out in the 46th over with the score on 199. A safe catch by Ian Merrett in the deep off Nick in the 47th. An expensive penultimate over off Goughie leaving them 3 to win in the “extra” 49th over which they did in 2 balls.
Peter kept well and no one bowled badly but either we lacked the strike potential or more likely Puds prepared too good a batting wicket. Phil “Opera” Brown was the most economic with Nick the most successful with 2 for 58 off 10.2.We could have fielded a bit better, we could have had more luck with balls beating the bat but not getting wickets. Ultimately despite keeping the field attacking we did not get enough wickets to exposure their soft underbelly and have a chance for a win. Full credit to Radlett who played very well to chase down the target which they must have initially thought was beyond them. In the grand scale of things they are well below us in the league and their points not that relevant to us. We ended up with 14 points, at least had an interesting finish, gained some experience for future potentially more important finishes and actually ended up going up a place to third in the league.
Things could have been different had we won the toss and bowled. We may be more careful about overs on the scoreboard matching what is in the book. Tim could have followed up his hypothesis with Quod Erat Demonstrandum but thankfully didn’t.
