Berkhamsted Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI v Chipperfield Clarendon on Sun 19 Jul 2020 at 1.30pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 40 runs
Match report
With the Sunday development team playing away this was a great chance to put out a relatively new team with a number of senior and junior players making their debut. Veteran skipper Simsy inserted the visitors to bat and our openers Robbie and Dan bowled an excellent spell and could easily have picked up a few wickets. Alfie came on, bowled a short ball and their opener slapped it straight to Matthew who took the first of 3 impressive catches. Through the course of the innings we took wickets regularly but there were also plenty of wides and no balls which always gave the opposition a chance to up the scoring rate. Some big shots by the Chipperfield tail- enders got the score up to 179 which was probably 25 more than it should have been. We never flagged in the field though and our catching was excellent.
After the de-rigeur alfresco tea our openers set about their task, Chris went early trying to pull a good length ball but then Matthew started to play some lovely crisp shots through the offside. Jack was unlucky caught superbly on the boundary but after that Matthew really started to dominate the bowling with some pulsating cover drives so that at the halfway stage we were in a decent position. What became apparent was that the oppositions back up bowlers were just as good if not better than their openers and after Matthew was bowled for an excellent 64 the innings faded badly and we finished 40 runs short.
A very encouraging performance in this sadly truncated season
