Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI v Flitwick on Sat 26 May 2007 at 1:30
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won
Match report
Banter 1. an exchange of light, playful, teasing remarks; good-natured raillery.
Abuse 1. to speak insultingly, harshly, and unjustly to or about.
After winning the toss (again!) Berkhamsted opted to put the unknown footballers from flitwick in. The pitch was hard and green and with overcast conditions seemed the logical thing to do.
At 39-3 their flimsy top order was tested with some good pacey bowling from Olly “honey monster” janaway and Ali Bray (recovering from “food poisoning”) Gurney and Hart literally edged there way (inside and out) to a hundred then with a few more lusty blows the pair had got up to 154 until a clever bit of bowling from the berko skipper Mark “fish” Herring got Gurney.
With only Hart scoring any runs of note (97) Janaway helped himself to another swag bag of wickets to claim an impressive haul of 6-62 Flitwick ended on a respectable and testing total of 235-8
With rain at tea making the pitch pretty juicy their bowling attack started well with the wicket of the form opener Nick Seagrave for 0. With a dubious caught behind not given against Steadman the oppo bowling attack was rustled and let the situation get to them with lots of “banter” (some quite amusing some not quite banter) they were too busy being occupied by the decision which had gone and instead ignored Ian “statto” Hammond at the other end and Berkhamsted cruised to 41 at a good pace then James Steadman was finally dismissed with a good diving catch. The “honey monster” Janaway joined Hammond and the pair looked in no trouble at all and raced to 106 until made a very rare mistake and was bowled for a beautiful 63. Ali Bray (35) and Janaway (49) again looked comfortable against a weak bowling attack and were keeping us in the hunt until both were given leg before. At 177-5 Gareth Parker Jones (25) and Herring (26) came to the crease needing 58 they cruised home with some beautiful running and good hitting with more than 5 overs to spare to end 236-5 of 41.1
An interesting game which was won convincingly by the public school boys and with the teachers doing their jobs more than adequately! A third straight win for Berko which puts us in good form for no doubt a tough game next week against Welwyn Garden City!
