Match report
THE RETURN OF THE INTREPIDS
When Simon Atkins started skippering the 4th/5th team a few years ago he christened them "The Intrepids" - which made them sound like a bunch of globe trotting cavalier cricketers when in actual fact they were often just making the short trek to Haslam's Fields on Shootersway. Or walking through the gap in the hedge onto the school field. So, when we saw we had 60 players available on Monday we decided it was time to bring the Intrepids out of hibernation.
The usual cocktail of ages in the Intrepids is nursing home meets kindergarten and true to form 4 senior players took the field with 7 lads under 18. Mark lost the toss and Totteridge decided to have a bat. Their openers were in good form and thrived on the short ball on a bouncy wicket, but their innings subsided following a silly run out and the introduction of spin, especially Will Currie who tied the batters in knots and took 4 quick wickets. The oppo lower order launched some big hits which progressed their score towards 200 but then Jess took a fine running catch off Derek's bowling and Mark mopped up the tail leaving us going into tea with a good chance of a win.
After tea, we set about the total, but 2 smart slip catches saw the back of Charlie O and Dan which left James & Charlie M to repair the innings. At 61-2 it was looking comfortable but then we lost 3 quick wickets to leave us struggling. There were then 2 excellent partnerships between Mark and Jess (49) and Mark and Will (36) which got us to within 30 runs of victory. Will then clipped 3 lovely leg side fours and although Will was then bowled for a superb 27, Oscar and Steve saw us through to victory, with an over to spare.
A really enjoyable game played in very warm conditions as the summer finally arrived in Berko. Next week the Intrepids hit the road provided we can find enough adults to drive! Man of the Match goes to Will Currie for his all round contribution.
