Berkhamsted Cricket Club 2nd XI v Harpenden IV on Sat 08 Aug 2015 at 1pm - 100 overs (53/47)
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
A stunning day at the club, crystal blue skies and a blazing sun. Brownie handed captaincy responsibility to Mark after an airport mishap with his car, Mark lost the toss and after a quick pep talk in the dressing room promptly handed the on field captaincy to James. 3 skippers in a day, that must be a record!
Harpenden looked a totally different team from when we played them earlier in the season so as they went out to bat it was difficult to know quite what to expect. Our opening bowlers Toby and Jordan were immaculate, perfect lines/length in the famous corridor of uncertainty and 2 wickets went down in the first 2 overs, smart catches by Brownie and Ian. After that we must have beaten the bat 20 times in the next few overs but no more wickets fell and Harpenden began to build slowly. We were sharp in the field, especially Sam and he was rewarded with a good catch off Toby's bowling and then Darren got one to pop to pick up another. Harpenden's no 5 an ex Area team-mate of George and Jamie played some terrific shots before ballooning one off Toby to depart for 49 and after that the innings quickly subsided, Jordan returning with Toby to mop up the tail with some full straight ones. An excellent afternoon in the field and Toby Gribbin's fanclub on the boundary must have been pleased as he led off the team after a five-fer.
After tea and a quick glance at the football scores (can it really be the first day of the season)we went out to chase down the total. James and Sam got us off to a very steady start and although Sam went for 16 it laid the platform for a comfortable win. Darren came and went for a quick 16 only for James and Brownie to see us through with bundles of overs to spare. James played the perfect innings, chanceless and hitting the bad balls for 4 to finish on 82 not out.
Over several jugs of beer on the decking celebrating a number of 50s and 5-fers for various teams it was a bit disappointing to see we had only moved up one place in the league to 4th but we are still in striking distance of promotion and we play the second placed team next Saturday - a must win game!
