Berkhamsted Cricket Club U14 A v Abbots Langley on Mon 23 Jun 2014 at 6pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 34 runs
Match report
Charlie kept his unbroken record of losing every toss this season but somewhat surprisingly was asked to bat. An excellent platform was built by Josh Todd (16) and Sam Quinn, who had come in after TP retired hurt having tested the efficacy of his box against the hardness of the new ball; the box was found wanting on this occasion. Sam anchored the innings, batting from over 2 to over 18 for his 28 runs. Hugh Phillipson hit a quick 14 in muscular fashion and Toby O'Gorman added a stylish 13, Jack Hadden made an important contribution with 8 not out, not just with his own runs but also his willingness to take a quick single to get the well-set Quinn and later the powerful James Godsell on strike; James fulfilled his end of that bargain in typical style with a 4 and a huge 6 before holing-out in the deep. A real team effort that set a decent if not impregnable target of 118 for Abbotts to win.
Abbotts Langley have been very successful in this age group for years based on their two exceptional opening batsmen (who also do the lion's share of the bowling) and this match undoubtedly turned on our first two overs which saw both openers dismissed with only 9 on the board thanks to two outstanding catches from Hugh Phillipson and Tom Clarke who was nearly knocked off his feet by the power of the shot but he held on bravely.
Hugh bowled a hostile opening spell and Toby O'Gorman produced another miserly display of three maidens in four overs (his figures for the last two matches combined are a remarkable 6 overs, 4 maidens, 7 runs for 4 wickets).
However, having been in a dominant position we almost let Abbotts back into the game with some over-confidence and lack of focus in the field, their number 6 and 8 batsmen both got comfortably into double figures and on another day could have made it a very close finish. As it happened the match ended in almost comical fashion as Sam Quinn, who was struggling with a muscle injury, fooled three Abbotts' batsmen into playing poor shots with a variety of full-tosses and long-hops (or "slower ball bouncers" as the TV pundits call them nowadays) in an eventful final over.
A great win over a team that have always been too good for us in previous years.
