Match report
An exciting match that went right down to the wire. Beautiful sunny day we were grateful to be playing on the main square at Met Police ground and not the one that requires an easy jet flight. Skipper Mark standing in for PD won the toss and not being entirely confident of our batting prowess inserted the opposition. After an early breakthrough from Joe, numbers 2 and 3 settled in for a good partnership and it looked like an afternoon of hard toil until Jamie came on to work his magic, taking 2 quick wickets. After drinks Mark unveiled his secret weapon, Derek bamboozling the batters with good flight and with Jamie chipping away at the other end the wickets fell like dominoes. We polished off the innings with a run out and our catching and ground fielding was excellent, Will keeping well throughout. Point of interest - Mark noticed their umpire/skipper was no-balling Joe for bowling from behind the stumps (an obvious mistake) however it cost us 2 runs - would that prove to be crucial?
After an excellent tea - hot chips and sausages, juicy melon and fruit cake - we were hopeful of knocking off the runs but unfortunately our top order collapsed quicker than the banks in 2008. After what seemed like 10 minutes we were reeling at 11-5 and staring at an embarrassing defeat. Then James, playing his first game for 2 years, and Jamie promoted up the order settled things down until Jamie and the skipper went in quick succession. Joe then joined James and these 2 played really sensible cricket to bring up the 100. James ran out of steam and was bowled for a superb 42 but Joe continued to defend and attack at the right time and chip away at the score. Derek came in as last man with 18 needed to win and single by single they progressed towards the target when with just 2 runs needed (see above) Joe was yorked for a fine 31.
In all fairness, Met Police had bowled really well and just about deserved their victory but well done to our young lads James and Joe who showed fantastic maturity and skill to take us within a whisker of a famous victory.
