Dunstable v Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 13A on Wed 19 Jun 2013 at 6pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won BCC won by 4 wickets
Match report
Hat trick inspires U13s to first win of the season!
Dodging the showers and finding perhaps the only dry spot in the County, the U13s finally got the better of their opponents after a series of near misses.
Dunstable won the toss and opted to bat and with storm clouds looming it was probably the right decision. They were soon into their stride, scoring at a steady 5 an over until a sharp pick up and throw from Josh disposed of one of their dangerous openers. However it wasn’t until the 9th over that BCC picked up the next wicket by which time Dunstable has stretched to a commanding 56-2 and a large total looked likely. But the game turned again with a fine catch from Tom and another by Max combined with some sharp fielding in the deep had Dunstable pegged back to 86-4 after 15. Then up stepped James who after a poor first over, had swapped ends and was now charging in down the hill. Three fiery deliveries had the batsmen in all sorts of trouble and it was the 4th ball of the over that saw James strike first, taking out the off stump and seeing the bails sail well clear of Charlie behind the stumps. 5th ball and a perfect length tempted the new batsmen to play, snagging an edge which Charlie held. Last ball of the over. Could James achieve what no bowler in this side has ever managed since we started as U9s? 6th ball and another absolute gem saw the stumps again disintegrate and hat trick achieved and Dunstable reduced to 88-8! Just about drawing breath, we had to regain focus for the last couple of overs and Toby duly snaffled a couple more wickets to end Dunstable’s innings at 102 all out.
This was the lowest target we had been set all year so well within our reach and after our customary test match paced start at 3 an over, we began to pick up the pace with a typical swashbuckling innings from Tomas “how many balls left please umpire” Pierleoni (33 no), and a steady contribution from Charlie (16). So at the half-way stage we were in touch if just marginally behind the required rate but with wickets in hand. James (14) again punished the bad balls and looked on for another big score when unfortunate to be given out LBW but that bought Christian (10) to the crease after a long absence and he combined well with an aggressive Max (11) to bring us to within 7 runs of victory with 2 overs to go. I am at a loss to describe what happened next but suffice to say we made a good effort at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory with Christian running Max and then himself out in quick succession. Needing just 1 to win off 4 balls, it was Tom who stepped up and with his first ball drove a good length delivery for 4 through mid-on to seal a well-deserved victory. Phew!
