Match report
On a Scorchio day, the hottest day of the year so far, we travelled to Old Merchant's Taylors new home for an old fashioned timed game, as our league fixture was conceded by Datchworth.
Many a discussion was had as to what route to take, with most of West Hertfordshire visited by one car en route! but eventually we assembled and had the picturesque old pavilion of the school to change in. No one wanted to field in the searing heat, but of course, Jack lost the toss and into the field we went onto a very dry low wicket.
Debutant David Vaughan and James Sibley bowled tightly and OMT were crawling along at less then 2 an over, with the help of some tidy fielding and nearly another jug worth catch from Guy at gully till his landing dislodged the ball. Finally the breakthrough came my another debutant, Dylan who enticed the opener to knick it behind from his extra pace. A wicket then for David, and young Harry Hunter reduced OMT to 67-3 at the first drinks break, good support from Peps and Dan Macey again kept the run rate down with wickets falling regularly and at the second drinks break at 35 overs OMT were limping along at 142-7. Unfortunately the heat, some loose balls, tired fielding and an excellent knock of 100 from there No.3 rapidly improved the run rate until OMT were finally all out for 215 after 46 overs. After a long tea interruption due to half the oppo missing, we finally begun our reply. Jack fell in the first over, but steady batting from Adam and Mark built a solid foundation until Mark fell LBW, closely followed by Adam, out bat before wicket, er..., lbw. Harry then promoted up the order because he had to leave early and Guy looked to stabalise the innings, sadly Harry quickly departed, and Guy and Adam Brierley put on 40 odd for the next wicket, with some excellent attacking shots from Adam until he was caught. Guy continued to frustrate until he was bowled by the excellent OMT youngster. Dylan quickly followed by being caught at cow, and with any chance of winning gone with 7 overs to go, Peps and Dan Macey battened down the hatches, which included a comical couple of moments when Peps turned down a single (or 2) for Dan, and the latter then doing the same to Peps in the next over. So all in all, not a bad performance in the searing heat, just shame the 4 Berko players to get into the 20's couldn't go on to mount a serious challenge to win the game. Special mention to Adam Brierley for his effort in the field and his spirited batting
