Cheshunt v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 25 May 2013 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report It was a good toss to win. Unfortunately the skipper didn't and we were invited to bat on a bread and butter pudding. Sour grapes would say the pitch got better as the day went on and the pitch dried up. In honesty had we applied ourselves with the bat and got 30 more runs the match could have been a lot different.

The new opening partnership of Tinkerbell and Wyatt Earp saw us off to a steady start until James was bowled by a full toss. With Berkhamsted looking comfortable against their young seam attack the opposition changed to spin from both ends. With the wicket damp and sticky the ball gripped and spun sharply and caused our batsman all sorts of problems. However too many times we tried to be aggressive on a pitch that demanded patience and hard work. In Div 4 herts cricket you will get bad balls to put away even on a tricky wicket. Only OD and the skipper showed a bit of aptitude to forge a partnership and move the total from humiliating to embarrassing. however both were out trying to force the pace with overs running out and in the end we set the opposition 104 to win.

Discussions over tea focused on the tuna sandwiches and food poisoning but all I know is to avoid the cray fish salad from a certain pub down the high street (As well as a pint of Peroni - £4.90 - ridiculous)

Similar to Nassar Hussian on Sky giving his "third man" analysis, the captain gave a frank and honest assessment of the batting display. Probably included more swear words than Nas but it was a new revolutionary technique picked up from the man management guru Joe Kinnear. In any case it pumped the team up and we took the field knowing that a couple of early wickets and we were in this game.

With the opposition getting the most out of the wicket with their spinners the captain started with the old ball and the off-spin paring of Riaz and James. Although the batsman made a reasonable start they didn't look comfortable and we got our reward when one of the openers top edged to mid wicket. Their number three edged to Jez and suddenly the belief was there. The normally tight lipped Jez was up chirping away and certainly got some biters. He probably shouldn't have referred to their batsman as a .......well best not repeat it here. But let's just say the skipper's recent course on international diplomacy came in handy.

Wickets steadily fell and the opposition were 70 for 6. However after a few lusty blows, Brooks and Stephenson took the game away from Berko. Riaz bowled well and was unlucky to miss out on a 5 for and was ably backed up by Shah. Well backed up in the bowling department rather than catching (for his 5th wicket)

A disappointing day all round and hopefully we can get back to winning ways next week. We most work on our batting and improve the chat behind the stumps.
