Bushey v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 04 Aug 2012 at 1.00pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
After a couple of defeats on the trot, the team ventured forth to Bushey determined to get the season back on track. Being only a half hour drive away (practically a home game verses our other away trips) the captain was confident there would be no dramas in getting there. Having sampled the Watford one way system a couple of times and taking in the picturesque Vicarage Road stadium we turned up slighter later than planned.
Despite the opposition still only having 8 men and us in the middle of our warm up the umpire was keen for a toss up. Much to the annoyance of the skipper as 1) the oldies were 1-nill up in the cricket ball throwing game (I must come up with a catchier name) and 2) The covers were still on and hence we hadn’t even seen the wicket yet. Nevertheless with the umpire determined to ruin our fun the opposition captain won the toss and elected to bat.
Josh and Hamish opened the bowling well to keep the run rate down and placed the pressure onto the batsman. Josh especially was pushing the ball through quite sharply for such a young lad and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket. It was slow going for the opposition but Berkhamsted weren’t making inroads. The skipper however made an inspired bowling change, part visionary, part mandatory as both openers had reached their allotted overs restrictions. Nonetheless this brought the desired effect as Luke took care of their two openers.
Then something quite magical happened. As the grey clouds started to gather up above and rolling thunder was heard in the distance, a single bolt of lightening came down on to the ground about 12 paces from the stumps. As the smoke cleared and the clouds gave way to bright sunshine there stood Andrew “Joycey” Joyce. Having been crucified by his girlfriend the previous Sunday this was clearly the resurrection. Spotting scars the shape of nail holes on both palms the Second Coming demanded the cricket ball. With the Almighty’s power behind his right arm He bowled a spell of 11 overs that can only be described as unplayable. Feeling the divine intervention it gave the whole team a lift (including the skipper who went horizontal to catch their dangerous No 3). There was no stopping the man and He ended up with figures of 6/22 and for the first time this season we had bowled a side out and for only 100. Destiny awaited us.
At tea there was disappointment over the 5 bread rolls and 2 tins of tuna. However with Joycey taking it upon himself to dish out the tea, somehow everyone came away with enough cheese and ham sandwiches to feed 5000 cricketers. It was like some sort of modern day miracle. Plus there was a finger of fudge each.
The news had clearly started to spread that something special was taking place in the Bushey area. This led to the second miracle of the day.....not one but two away supporters turned up to watch. Although it was slow going at the start of our innings against some tight spin bowling and the loss of two early wickets, Joycey was there to steady the ship. He and Luke put on 80 together to all but put us over the line and it was left for our on loan Scottish International to hit the winning runs.
Jubilant scenes followed and a great victory to get us back on track. The whole team played well and a real team spirit is emerging. However the day belonged to Joycey. Had Jez stayed around till after the game no doubt He would have fixed his broken finger.
