Broxbourne v Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 11 A on Thu 14 Jul 2011 at 6pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost BCC lost by 17 runs
Match report
Despite the loss BCCs U11As can hold their heads up high after putting in a brave performance against a good, well-drilled Broxbourne XI.
Suffering from M25 closures, BCC arrived somewhat frazzled in dribs and drabs so a late start was required and a reduction in overs to 18 per side. BCC lost the toss and were asked to field and with just 10 men took to the task. Jake's usual line and length kept the openers from scoring and soon we had wickets on the board; the first a fine diving catch by Kian at extra cover. However further wickets didn't arrive until Broxbourne had almost 50 on the board. We then turned to the spin of Josh and as per our last match, the Todd/Ormerod partnership snaffled the next two wickets with two beautiful stumpings from Charlie after Josh gave it some air and delivered the perfect line and length. Christian supported Josh from the other end and looked in reasonable form too! A third wicket for Josh (a catch for Jake in the covers), had Broxbourne in a bit of trouble at 59 for 5 when Jake struck again - a fine catch behind the stumps for Charlie. With Tomas alas still enjoying the delights of the M25, Max and Tom stepped up to fill the gap and both picked up a wicket a piece; Tom dismissing one of Broxbourne's big hitters and thus keeping us in the game.
So set 99 to win, BCC strode forth but within the first over had Kian back in the pavilion, falling foul of some very low and inconsistent bounce. Christian joined Tom at the crease and the pair began to move things along. Delighted to see Christian get himself into his innings with a couple of singles - well done! Normal service restored with Christian hitting 4 boundaries in quick succession including two stroked masterfully back over the bowler's head. Unfortunately a rush of blood to the head resulted in a daft call and Christian found himself run out. Jake, who had been struggling with the bat of late, played himself in and soon had the scoreboard ticking again with a couple of well hit boundaries and some quick singles. However some tighter bowling (in particular the leg spin of Beech), meant BCC started to fall behind the required run rate with neither batsmen able to get him away. Tom finally fell for a patient 16 and so Jake was joined by Charlie. Alas there was too much to do from the last few overs and so we fell short by 17.
A great effort and you should all be very proud of yourselves and as I am of you.
