Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 15B v Bushey on Mon 27 Jun 2011 at 6 pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report The penultimate match saw a tense game against Bushey unfold. Bushey had been going quite well and I fancied it might be a tough match. Chris Lovett (aka Captain Fantastic; more anon) wandered out to the middle and tossed up. The wicket was a bright green shiny surface that promised much and as it was so humid you could cut the air with a blunt knife. Good use of the new ball could make batting a bit awkward. Opener BVV had a loosener first ball and then took a very good catch to dismiss the opener for nought. A few scurried singles got the board moving but the ball was swinging like a 70’s disco (copyright Theo from the 3rd team game a few weeks ago) and BVV smelt wickets. I was standing at square leg so I couldn’t see what was happening at the other end but Jamie had a few directional issues and despite the coach’s usual mantra of no wides, we had quite a few. Bickers clearly had eaten well before the match and movement seemed at a bit of a premium behind the stumps so there were also a few byes.
Next over BVV bowled a beauty and a bit of late swing saw the No.3 depart the scene. Fast forward an over and it was déjà vu as again, beautiful late swing bowled the No.4. Enter Jamie as having retuned the sat nav he bowled the other opener and it was 31 – 4 off 6 with most of the runs either byes or wides. After 8 overs they were 40 for 5 with BVV having got 3 and Jamie 2. Good opening spell from them both. Freddie was next up with JP. Every time Captain Fantastic demanded a wicket, he got one. Bowled or stumped it was bowling to order. JP had obviously borrowed Jamie’s sat nav and sadly it still had moments when it didn’t work. With JP slightly off colour Will G came on. With a good win (get it!) demanded by Bickers, Will G had it all wrapped up in a few minutes. 1 over, 2 wickets, 1 run. Shame his Dad doesn’t bowl that straight.

66 All Out but with 32 extras!!!!!!!!!!

Off to bat. Bickers and Chris wandered out and we were going well until the third ball when a very speedy opening bowler uprooted Chris’s off stump. Not quite Captain Fantastic but a very good square cut so probably Lance Corporal Fantastic with the bat.
Ollie committed suicide with his run and was out by miles. Bickers then ruined Marcus’s evening with possibly the worst call I have seen all season.....and there have been some howlers. He apologised but Marcus may still need counselling for a few months.
With Bushey leaking as many wides and extras as we did, the score was jogging along but sadly wickets also fell with some regularity. Adam’s new bat worked well albeit briefly and JP biffed a few useful boundaries before he too missed a straight one. We always had time but it was just a question of getting the runs on the board. Freddie nurdled a boundary or two and eventually a big drive from Jamie got us home. It was a bit tight but we won and if we hadn’t bowled so badly we would have been home about an hour earlier.
The last game is a “must win situation”. Sorry for the management speak but if we lose we are toast. If we win then we have a chance of finals day.

P8, W5 L2 A1.
