Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 15B v Watford on Mon 09 May 2011 at 6 pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 42 runs
Match report
What a difference four days can make in performance!
Tonight a changed team trooped out against Watford Town on the main square. Clearly the 1st XI influence was rubbing off as it was (in parts) a masterclass.
Skipper Bickerdike won the toss and elected to bat. He decided to open with Oli Floyd and they decided that they would take advice from the coach and bat for longer than the end of the second over. It was measured and controlled and as confidence grew the scoreboard started to accelerate. Will B was the first to go but he had played some lovely shots on his way to a composed 22. At the other end Oli blossomed and started to control the bowling. He deservedly worked his way to 30 before retiring. Next up was Adam and he learnt a valuable lesson that the ball remains live until it has crossed the boundary. If it doesn’t cross the line then you can be run out. As they say on “Question of sport”, what happened next? Correct. Depart Brierley run out for 12 but nonetheless some very good shots.
Enter the “Parrylyzor”. If he concentrates he will be a great player and he timed the ball beautifully on his way to a retirement at 30. At this stage the Watford Town heads were dropping but the control on the hitting and the general level of running and calling had the coach purring with delight.
Chris Lovett hit some glorious pulls on his way to a retirement and at 153 the score was always likely to be well beyond Watford. Credit to all the batsmen as it was a top effort.
On a spinners wicket it was agreed that we would open with Amish and Peter G. Superb. Even the spin twins of Emburey and Edmonds would have been struggling to compete with the line and length and at 8 overs the score was about 35 for 4 and the game was over as a contest. To compound a superb bowling performance Hawkeye Pete had a run out chance with one stump to aim at. “What happened next?” Correct, one stump and a very unhappy batsman. Top work.
It got a bit ragged at the end but it was late, the boys were tired and the game was won but it reminded the team that it was not too difficult to score at 10 an over when needed.
Watford finished with 111 so an easy win.
Bowling still needs work but batting, running, calling and fielding were excellent. Particular praise to Chris L who took a super catch in the deep.
On to the next one!
