West Herts v Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 15B on Fri 06 May 2011 at 6 pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 11 runs

Match report A glorious evening and there was considerable enthusiasm for the game as all players and coach were busy warming up 30 minutes before play was due to commence. Leading the team, James Parry lost the toss and West Herts decided to bat. Prior to going out we had decided to try and ensure that we restricted the extras and caught the catches, basic stuff but it was our undoing last season and hopefully as the boys were all a bit older and wiser there would be significant improvement. Watch this space!

Openers Slater and Van Vlymen struggled to hit any consistency and the score board started to tick along quickly. It was only when the bowling changed and the skipper came on that we looked like we could restrict a score to under 100. Parry bowled well taking three quick wickets but again accuracy was inconsistent and despite the wickets the West Herts score progressed quickly.
A few sharp catches went down but generally the fielding was good with some good throwing, backing up and generally being alert. Behind the stumps Will Bickerdike did well on a very bumpy outfield but due to some fairly poor accuracy, there were some balls that he simply could not get to and the byes racked up. The West Herts score finished at 110 and although more than we would have wanted it was a very achievable score on a small ground with a fast outfield. The boys really let themselves down with the extras as there were 36 out of 110 so nearly one third of the score.

Those that had not bowled were given the chance with the bat and Oliver and Marcus went out opening the batting. A rather poorly called run meant that we lost Oli fairly quickly and straight bowling saw Marcus bowled shortly thereafter. Will B and Adam batted really well and put the run chase back on but despite some super shots from them both they fell just as they were really getting going. Will for 9 and Adam for a very powerful 19. Again straight bowling saw Harry bowled and Chris Lovett also. Amidst this entire period, skipper JP looked very composed and batted well to reach a very good 30 before retiring. It was a good match for James although he discovered captaincy and field placing is not quite as easy as it looks on the TV.

Brief respite was provided for West Herts when JP retired but Jamie and James batted really well and James Wilton in particular batted with great aplomb to keep Berkhamsted right in the game. When Jamie was bowled (one of 6 bowled victims) the last few simply had not got time to see themselves in at the crease and the game was lost in the penultimate over.

3 Lessons to be learnt;
Bowl straight. Bowl straight. Bowl straight
Overall not bad for the first outing but improvement is needed.
