Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 15A v Chorleywood on Thu 05 May 2011 at 545pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost Chorleywood won by 5 wickets
Match report
How to describe a game as remarkable as this one? If cricket is supposed to be character forming then the lads characters should be formed completely by the end of the season as for the second week running they managed to lose a game they should have comfortably won.
We batted first, making our usual tentative start against good tight bowling. James, Ethan and Robert all went cheaply and after 10 overs we were really struggling on 35 for 3. Then our middle order took a liking to Chorleywoods spin attack and the scorers were struggling to keep up with a blizzard of boundaries. Calum Miles (33 no), Matt Hopkins (30) and Ed Butler-Caddle (25 no) hit no fewer than 17 fours in the last 10 overs to move the score up to a healthy 124 off our alloted 20 overs.
Despite losing keeper Nick Williams to a dislocated finger in the 3rd over (Nick thought it was funny but it wasnt pretty) our bowling and fielding in the first 10 overs was exceptional - great fast bowling from Josh and Ethan, excellent boundary fielding especially from Jonny and after 10 overs we had Chorleywood in terrible trouble at 42 for 5. What happened next almost defied belief as Chorleywood's next pair Ryan and Hodson decided they had nothing to lose and went for their shots with abandon. One wicket would probably have sealed the game but we managed to put down 3 high catches in a row and from that moment on we went to pieces as the batters confidence soared. The 18th over proved to be the clincher as the batters took advantage of some wayward bowling to club 21 off the over and virtually seal victory. Hodson finished the game with a huge six over the tree and Berkhamsted were left wondering what had hit them.
Never had the phrase "catches win matches" been more apt, a painful lesson learnt!
