Abbots Langley IV v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 5th XI on Sat 11 Jun 2011 at 1.00pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 91 runs

Match report Here was the very type of match which - regardless of the result - underlines the worth of the club's investment in a 5th XI. Defeat notwithstanding, its not hard to be positive about the plucky efforts of a Berkhamsted team whose youth contrasted hugely with a very experienced and match-savvy opposition.

Not a single player should come away unencouraged. Abotts batted first - Jack Hunter and Jacob Lewarne opened the bowling accurately and adjusted their lines smartly against a strong left/right-hand opening pair. Their century stand threatened to underpin a vast total...but James Chambers and Ali Mansoor halted the rush - Ali bowling an extended, varied spell of left-arm "loops and darts" which brought a flurry of wickets and educated the younger element in "wresting back control". James came back at the end to strike as well...but not before 13-year-old George Lewarne had stuck bravely to his leg-spin principles in the face of an onslaught from Abbotts' third half-centurion. However, the bowling revelation of the day was an initially-reluctant Rob Prunty who bowled six "death" overs from one end with ram-rod straightness and exceptional calm - no greater feeling for a young (or old!!) medium-fast bowler than to hit off-stump an inch from the top!

Amid all of this - on a desperately rutted and uneven outfield - our groundfielding was exemplary and only one (difficult) catch went down - a fine study in sustained concentration from players, several of whom know little yet beyond the 20-over game.

Perhaps batting is the area where most lessons need to be learned. Too many of our wickets fell to "hot-headed" heaves from lads who failed to "play the situation". Honourable exceptions were Jack Furlong and Adam Drury, both of whom "built foundations" and played a couple of pleasing shots before being yorked by a swiftish left-armer. Those two - and Oli Buchanan (who was unlucky to pick out a diving midwicket with an authentic clip off his front pad) - are not far from making substantial contributions. George Lewarne hit a few lustily uninhibited blows at the end...after the skipper (supported chiefly by Ali M) made it his business to repair an "ugly" scoreboard, avoid embarrassment, bat through and bore the opposition to within an inch of submission! By the end, we were even dealing in batting bonus points!
