Berkhamsted Cricket Club 4th XI v Ware II on Sat 23 Jul 2011 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 11 runs
Match report
In one of the more remarkable games in recent times, Berkhamsted IVs came out on top in a closely contested game against high-flying Ware IIs at Kitchener’s Field on Saturday. The outcome was most unlikely, not least because Ware were in pole position having lost just one game to date whereas Berko’s indifferent form saw them perilously close to the foot of the league table.
Having lost the toss, the home side struggled against an excellent Ware attack and found themselves in dire straits at an incredible 1 for 3 after 11 overs. Gradually however, Berko’s middle and late order succeeded in setting their opposition a respectable target of 151, much indebted to William Holderness and the chairman who both hit huge sixes in the course of their innings, and a fantastic unbeaten last wicket partnership between Will and Sammy
Ware got off to a solid start and looked set for a comfortable victory having reached 44 for the loss of just one wicket. It was then that left-armer Will Clayton, having made the initial breakthrough, tore into the heart of the visitors' batting reducing them to 79-9 with a devastating spell of seam bowling. At that stage, Berko could have been forgiven for thinking that victory was theirs but Ware’s captain, ably assisted by a solid no 11 dug in and slowly but surely edged towards their target and with 2 overs remaining they required just 15 to win. However, the ever-reliable Ollie Campbell picked up the final and decisive wicket with just 8 balls to spare and Ware were dismissed for 140. As well as the bowling performances of Will Clayton (7-45) and Oliie Campbell (3-51), Berko’s victory owed much to the standard of their fielding including a series of remarkable catches.
