Cockfosters IV v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 02 Jul 2011 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 68 runs
Match report
Another good performance from the 4th team on a very difficult wicket which had a great deal of uneven bounce. We travelled with 8 men hoping that the other 3 would materialise and we were perhaps fortunate to be put into bat allowing our missing players to arrive in time to strap on the pads. In between we had lost Andre and Peter cheaply but then recovered thanks to good batting from Will H and Oli B who ran well between the wickets. After seeing off the opening bowlers Will rather gave it away and Oli soon followed. In strode Khan with the insouciance of the mighty Viv and he immediately started to send the ball flying over the midwicket boundary. When joined by the in-form OC the run rate soared and together they put on 66 for the 6th wicket. Cockfosters spinner Solanki kept plugging away though and he eventually picked up both players and Joe, Mark and Shakeel and suddenly we were back in trouble. Fortunately these days Will C has decided he is an all rounder and in partnership with last man Ali we comfortably went past maximum batting points until Mark had seen enough and declared leaving us 45 overs to bowl them out.
After tea our warm up must have been the most impressive in 4th team history and we looked scarily like a decent cricket team. It proved not to be a false dawn as Will and Jo ripped through the top order leaving the opposition 10-3. After that we had to work harder for our wickets but thanks to a great catch from Khan, the most relaxed catch ever from Shakeel and OC's usual accurate spell we chipped away and ran out comfortable winners. Our fielding had been excellent throughout and Peter kept superbly despite some terrible bounces.
Stand in skipper Mark, suffering from e-mail and phone psychosis after 3 weeks of contacting most of the population of Berkhamsted is now merrily handing back the armband to PW after his undeserved and over-long break for freedom.
