Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Wormley II on Sat 13 Aug 2011 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 91 runs
Match report
A heroic win for the 4s/5s masquerading as the 3s. With Charlie "enjoying" the luxuries of boundary ropes and electronic scoreboards down the hill emergency skipper Mark went out to lose the toss and we were soon batting on a drying wicket that immediately started misbehaving.
We made a steady start with Mark and James seizing on some short stuff to get the hand operated scoreboard moving nicely. Fortunately for us their main bowler was suffering with an injury and he only bowled 4 innocuous overs but that didnt stop us having our usual batting collapse that saw us plummeting to 65-5. With left arm spinner Dent bowling superbly from one end it looked like 100 would be a decent total but gradually Dan and Tom got on top of the bowling, surviving a couple of dropped catches to compile a match winning partnership of 110. Sadly for Dan he misjudged a run that would have seen him through to his first senior half-century but nevertheless it was a fine knock. After that Robert came in to bash a quickfire 24 and so we went into tea feeling pretty pleased with Act 1.
Act 2 belonged to our 2 left arm seamers Will and Tom who bowled with pace, skill and accuracy exploiting some extravagant sideways movement off the pitch. Our catching, with some minor blemishes, was exemplary. Credit to the opposition, all their batters went for their shots and they never tried to put up the shutters at any stage but this was a day when everything stuck. Mark grabbed 2 behind the sticks, Tom Pedrick took another in the gully, James got in the act at second slip and Jacob pouched a low one at midwicket. However all these efforts paled into insignificance when compared to the catch of the season by Sam at deep mid on from an exocet missile of a shot that was screaming into the next field for 6. Having done that he then took another similar catch in the same position and then with what was left of his fingers managed to bowl the last man to complete the victory. Piece of cake this cricket.
2 other notable moments - the injured opener won the Oscar for most petulant performance of the season with a great caber toss of his bat after being caught behind and Will got a classic assist off his own bowling to run out their keeper. Dismally he steadfastly refused to recognise this as a five-for and so the lads were denied a jug.
A memorable game and hopefully one that secures our status in Div 9.
