Match report
Berkhamsted 3XI v Watton at Stone Saturday 11th June 2011-06-12
For some it was grounds with significant memories as it was here in the gathering gloom of a late September afternoon some three years ago the Berkhamsted team watched as Paul Beard played his last game for the club. It was therefore entirely appropriate that today we witnessed an equally punchy innings that I am sure would have had a smiling supporter somewhere above.
By way of apology to the skipper and his teammates for petulance there shall be no comment about the toss save to say it was won by Charles and he elected to bat.
Burgess and Machon got off to a reasonable start and then with Mark, the author and Bart soon back in the hutch the position looked a little awkward. Andre and Ed nurdled and poked and as the sun shone and the wicket eased, proceedings started to go our way. Andre was out to allow Ian to the crease and he was subject to a curious decision possibly in response to an equally curious incident involving Ed and alleged run out.
With Gareth now at the wicket and score 123-5, things weren’t looking too great but Ed pulled, drove and swatted beautifully and with Gareth offering excellent support the score board advanced well. Ed cruised past 50 and the team score past 160. Albeit assisted by some indifferent ground fielding they did very well and with Ed now advancing towards a maiden hundred, Gareth was revelling in a really serious partnership. Credit to Edward as he did not take a more cautious approach to the nervous nineties and with the team score in his mind he just carried on and all of the team were delighted when he got to his very first hundred playing cricket anywhere (save possibly for a beach in Cornwall but yet to be verified). It was a great knock and even Mrs G consented to him being allowed a beer to celebrate later.
Gareth was not to be forgotten as his contribution was excellent and together the partnership was 82. Gareth charged and got bowled and with Josh and then the skipper coming on to ease a few more to the total we were all done at 237 -7 off 53 overs.
Openers Ian and Bart (playing his last game for the club before departing to Canada) bowled well in the early overs but without success. The opener who scored an extremely aggressive ton against us a few years ago started as he left off but thanks to wonderful hands and strong mental spirit, Theo was a more than equal match. Having spilled one going about Mach 2, he was then offered another chance and hung on well. It is fair to say that he fielded beautifully all day.
No 3 never looked like doing anything and was out caught by Mark for a long slow duck. No 4 came in and smacked several to the boundary and then occurs one of those moments that change a game. Bart bowled and there was a loud snick. With all of us looking to third man to see which tree the ball had gone behind, Ian dives to his left and picks up a catch low down that was past him. Superb!
Overs came and went and batsmen did likewise as they fidgeted but struggled. There was some good ground fielding and the run rate climbed and with man of the match Goodwyn bowling well he had a catch by Ezzie to go with a sharp caught and bowled, a smart stumping by Gareth (this one was allowed but another was not somewhat controversially) and then decided that a run out was needed. Goodwyn is indeed a man of many talents. The last few overs held limited promise but Watton were never threatening and they finished at 189 for 8. A very useful 18 points but it would have been nicer to win.
Thanks to Theo’s mum for teas, drinks, scoring and chauffeuring.
Edward, your day today, well done from all of us.
