Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Bushey II on Sat 14 May 2011 at 1pm

Match report
A curious blend of talent was summoned once again. The team has a hint of previous campaigns but once again we are looking a little light in key areas.
According to the chief tosser, it rolled and rolled and eventually came down tails; sadly the opposing skipper had called heads and we were consigned to the field.
I might repeat this during the course of the report but it was mighty cold. The wind cut through several layers and we all wished we had several more layers. A welcome return to the team was Martin Gough and he was congratulated on his winter activities. The main one being getting one wet knee in Central park whilst giving Jo a massive rock that must have caused a frisson of excitement in the insurance market. We are delighted to report that the lovely Jo said yes and we shall all look forward to being invited to an all expenses trip to Sri Lanka in the off season. Other than through his bowling, Goughies generosity knows no bounds.
You may have noticed a reluctance to comment on cricketing matters.
Bushey smashed 269 for two wickets off 43 overs. It was very cold.
Tea was great ( and warm) and we all enjoyed the cheese and tomato sandwiches. A little more salt maybe but otherwise they were excellent. There is still a worrying trend towards fruit teas and this must be stamped out. It is not right and PG tips are in danger of removing the sponsorship.
Off we went to bat. Still cold. The young Preedy and the slightly older Machon trotted off. If you add the author to the mix, nobody excelled and things looked a little tense at about 15 for 3. However Puds had enjoyed his tea and together with Abu and the Chairman a rearguard action was established. For a man with one hamstring Abu did well and when he departed the scene, Julian stepped forward. Now raining slightly and still cold. Julian was more Boycott than Botham but Puds had his eye in and must be congratulated for a marvellous 101. It was only when beaten for pace that things went wrong. Sadly it was the Chairman’s pace that was to blame and the sprightly Julian called for a single and that extra cake clearly slowed Puds down to such an extent that he was only going to be run out if it hit directly. Sadly it did but it was a great knock. At least he was warm.
Julian hung on and with a showcase from Gough who smashed his way to 22 NO, the tail wagged strongly. If only the loved up Clayton had not had the offer of something hot, steamy and exotic in North London to look forward too, we might have hung on but a chicken Buna with the lovely Katie saw him depart to Hendon at around 7.00pm. At 9 down that was it and despite scoring a worthy 12 points we are now P3. L3.
We look forward longingly to the days when we recognise the team but it was a good effort and despite the issues of availability, we are still mid table. If things return to normal then who knows, we could progress but at present the position is a tad distressed.
