Hatfield Hyde II v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 07 May 2011 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
It was an interesting week as we only really knew the team at 11.45 when we met in the car park. What is best described as a curious blend of talent ventured forth to Hatfield Hyde. The author was deprived of Charles usual in car feeding habits as there were no sausages, pasta or ice cream to spread over the interior.
We arrived not in a convoy much to the skippers chagrin and he shambled off for the toss. We had discussed and agreed in the car that batting would be good and lo it came to pass that the old tosser called correctly and we were to bat.
Lewarne decided that he didn’t fancy the idea of opening and so the space alongside the veteran Machon was offered to Abu Ahmed. A very tidy job he did until he tried to pull a ball that didn’t get up and that was that. The author sallied forth and watched as Machon teased the bowlers on his way to a glorious half century and beyond. They were tricky to get away and having got the score to a very respectable 165 (145 partnership) the author tried to pull another good length ball and that was that. Part 2. Despite all of this Machon cruised to a wondrous 95. Despite doing the last 30 on one leg, it was a superb effort and much cider will be spilt reliving every detail. In particular the argy bargy with the opening bowler.
Young Edward Butler Caddle (a future prime minister with a name like that) looked a bit edgy early on but my how he blossomed as time progressed. It was like watching a boy become a man as he nurdled to begin with and then towards the end, in the company of the gazelle like Drury, he drove and pulled like a man possessed. Excellent running between the wickets saw the score advance to 203 for 4. Such a score that we would have accepted at any time prior to play commencing. For reasons that will remain buried in the archive the skipper’s brief dalliance at the crease shall not be remarked upon.
Post an excellent tea we wandered out to see what was going to happen. We were a little tight on bowling talent but openers Clayton and FEPM, (Future English Prime Minister) bowled well and despite the regular four ball, kept us interested. With the score at 37, Clayton induced a little edge and a wonderful dive by Theo saw him back in the hutch. Theo didn’t get quite so close to the next edge but managed to deflect into Buckley’s waiting paws and we got another. The next batsmen took a bit of a liking to Ezzie’s bowling and it almost produced a wonder catch from gazelle Drury patrolling cow shot corner. It was not to be but it is recorded in despatches that it was a mighty fine effort. With momentum easing towards Hatfield Chas tossed the ball to young Hamish. He swung it like a 70’s disco and they had more misses than Henry VIII followed by more blocks than Legoland. A great spell of his inaugural 2 for and then it went a tad pear shaped and he got wiped for the last over. Hatfield passed the target with 5 wickets down and about 10 overs to spare.
Not a bad effort given available man power and the 15 points see us mid table with a record of P2, L2.
