Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Datchworth II on Sat 22 May 2010 at 13:00
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 107 runs

Match report For those of you with a nervous disposition, look away now. It was not
so much that the wheels came off the 3rd team limousine but that parts
of the axle, chassis and body work are now littering Brownlow road.
Charles shambled off to the top square to toss up on what was possibly
the most glorious day since records began. The boys were full of
optimism as Datchworth were not riding high in the league and with Alex
returning to the fold, we had our own run machine back in the top of
the order.
Charles called correctly and elected to field. The warm up was truly
superb and several remarked that a bad dress rehearsal often results in
a good performance. How prescient this was to be!
Newcomer Chris Stone and young Sam Harlow opened the attack. Both
produced some decent stuff and whilst Datchworth lost wickets, they
also added runs across a lightning fast outfield. The boys toiled and
we were doing ok at 60-3 off 15 overs. At this point enter one G
Chapman. Apparently he was out first ball last weekend but this week
was a very different story. His bat had a ridiculously large middle and
our bowling attack resembled Billy Bassets liquorice allsorts. A
veritable smorgasbord of buffet bowling as Chapman helped himself.
Balls flew everywhere and the fines pot swelled as catches were spilled
all over town. Our out fielding was about as tidy as the inside of
Charlie's car. If this performance had been an ailing beast, Goughie
would have been looking in the boot for a gun.
At 50 overs with the score a very respectable 254 for 7, the skipper
put us out of our misery and we trooped in for tea. Only John Ezard
with 4-38 could enjoy the delights that the tea table provided.
There was much talk of it's only 5 an over but the batting went the
same way as the bowling. Alex tried to pull a good length ball, Burgess
was snapped up at slip going for an expansive drive and Buckley hit a
long hop straight at cover point. 47-3 in the 11th over and we were in
a spot of bother. Puddles and Toddy battled well and eased us up to 74
before Pudds got a top edge that looped to mid wicket. Peter Drury
missed a straight one and despite a bit of good work from the skipper
and young Sam, the lights went out for 147 in the 43rd over.
There were a few good points. Romit Patel shows immense promise as
young spin bowler and Sam Harlow bowled with genuine pace. The other
positive is that the fines pot grew nicely and the 3rd team post season
dinner could be at a Ramsey establishment unless we improve.
