Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 12B v Shenley Village on Thu 27 May 2010 at 6pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 26 runs
Match report
Shenley Village came out on top in a keenly fought match between two of the division's form sides. Coming into the game both teams were unbeaten, but exams and last minute school matches gave the managers selection problems, with several players drafted into the teams late in the day.
Having won the toss, Shenley got off to a shaky start losing a wicket in the first over to a good catch from George Lewarne. The batsmen were then pegged back by some accurate bowling from the opening duo of Ted Stanford and Charlie Nicholls, but soon found their feet and built an impressive partnership.
Both Harris - who was dropped early in the innings - and Willis went on to reach 30 unbeaten, to give Shenley a very solid platform on which to build.
They pushed on with some great hitting from Cohen and Guerra - who was eventually stumped by William Bickerdike for 23 off the bowling of Jamie Slater - after clubbing a huge six over mid wicket. His partner Cohen (18) was caught by Filer after skying a ball from Jonathan Butler Caddle.
Patel and Wanniarachchi added an important 12 runs at the end of the innings and Shenley finished on 136-4 - a very useful score.
In reply, Berkhamsted - who needed almost seven runs an over for victory - started confidently with the opening pair of Nicholls and Stanford sharing a fifty partnership. When Ted retired on 30 having hit five boundaries and a six, the game was evenly balanced. But Shenley quickly turned things round, running out both Charlie Nicholls (16) and Jack Filer (14) after good work from wicketkeeper Guerra who had a great game behind the stumps.
Tight bowling from Willis, Benson and Wanniarachchi put the brakes on the scoring rate, and when Copping bowled captain Lewarne, Berkhamsted were in trouble.
Despite an aggressive innings from Harvey Lewis (15), the home team couldn't keep up with the asking rate - which had crept up to more than 10 an over in the latter stages - and Berkhamsted finished on 110-9, 27 runs short of the target.
Although this was the first defeat of the season for the under 12s, credit should be given to all the players - some of whom were playing their first game for the A team - who showed good spirit against very strong opposition.
