Northchurch v Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 13A on Sun 10 May 2009 at 10.00am
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won Berkhamsted won by 19 runs
Match report
A friendly match between Northchurch and Berkhamsted was played in glorious weather and with a great spirit. Berkhamsted opened the batting. The two Northchurch openers were accurate and fast reducing Berkhamsted to 14 for 3. James Ladgon was unlucky with a stunning caught and bowled from Jack L. Ed Butler-Caddle came to the crease and steadied the innings. He struck a glorious 35 without giving a single opportunity. Calum from Northchurch entered the fray and an accurate line and length spell was rewarded with a wicket. Josh Roberts struck a steady 29 not out and Adam Cowland pulled the ball at will for five boundaries. Berkhamsted were happy with their 125.
Northchurch made a solid start and after 5 overs the match was evenly poised. Robert Spencer strode in confidently on to his home pitch. Clearly he had just studied a batting text book as he struck some glorious off drives for four that brought applauds from around the ground. Jack Fantham for Northchurch was then unlucky as Robert Prunty took an excellent caught and bowled. Oliver then came to the crease and began to punish some short bowling. The match could have gone anyway until James Ladgon kept a cool head and ran him out. Nick Williams took a couple of superb catches behind the stumps and Josh Roberts took a couple of wickets to close the innings as Northchurch came tantalizingly close.
Berkhamsted had won by 19 runs.
The tactical battle continued however as Mrs. Spencer served a delightful tea. There was no discipline in the field as the teams fought for the sandwiches, three were dropped and a drink was spilled on the boundary. She then delivered a wicket taking delivery with a superb selection of cakes but only after the sandwiches had been eaten. A tactic that even Mike Brearley the greatest England captain would have been proud.
Thanks to Northchurch and Ian Fantham for an excellent match played as cricket should be.
