Memories of Gordon Paton - died aged 90
02 Jun 2010
Gordon, who passed away nearly two weeks ago aged 90, was the longest serving member of Berkhamsted Cricket Club other than Norman Warren. He joined the Club after the War in about 1946 and became one of the stalwarts of the 3rd X1 and the Wanderers and captain of both for a number of years.( I first met Gordon when he played for a Berkhamsted 3rd X1 at Hemel Hempstead Grammar School when I kept wicket for the School in 1946 or 1947. As a result he asked me to play in the Wanderers Team at East Barnet Old Grammarians that season)
Despite his poor eyesight ( he became blind in later years) his enthusiasm for playing the game and Berkhamsted Cricket Club in particular was enormous. He served on the Committee for many years and his legacy was as one of the most efficient and successful Team Secretaries that the Club ever had. Gordon had a little black book in which he kept the names not only of regular players but also those whom he could pull in at a moments notice, often on a Sat or Sun morning before the matches. He could conjure up a player seemingly from the air because he would ensure that the teams always had 11 players on the field. As a Captain of the aforesaid Teams, he had the ability to inspire everyone with his great enthusiasm and an extraordinary gift of remembering the strengths and weaknesses of the Clubs against whom he played each year. As a player he was disadvantaged by his poor sight but he was a more than useful middle order batsman.
Gordon was much admired by all those with whom and against whom he played and he will be remembered with great affection by those of us who served and played with him for so many years.
