Raiders match illuminated by two centuries and glorious sunshine

01 Jun 2009

In spectacular sunshine and amid a brilliantly sporting atmosphere (which would have thrilled the man in whose name the trophy was later presented), Raiders and the cricket club engaged in a match which went almost to the last over, contained two centuries and - most importantly - symbolised the happy co-existence that our town's two major sporting clubs now enjoy.

Raiders won (and were delighted to do so)...but it would be churlish not to report that SEVEN of the Raiders eleven were fully paid-up members of the cricket club (including our star centurion, Steve Tougher who - for those who don't know - skippers the cricket 2nd XI). In the interest of balance, it should also be reported that the cricket club's star centurion (Luke O'Dair) is also a fully paid up Raider!

It says everything we need to know about the modern relationship between the clubs that there is such a substantial cross-over.

Thanks to Greg for laying on the weather and hospitality, Julian & Ian for "hosting"...and all Raiders/cricket folk who either played or supported.

Thanks also to Ben Beard for collecting the trophy so proudly on his father's behalf (it will be placed back behind the club bar tonight...and - I trust - be competed for again next summer).

Balance from the tea money, profits from the BBQ and an impromptu collection raised £200 for the Paul Beard Memorial Fund.

Many thanks to everyone for a truly happy day...
