Berkhamsted Cricket Club 4th XI v Chorleywood IV on Sat 09 Jun 2018 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 86 runs
Match report
Here was a “Royals” XI whose average age had possibly trebled over the course of a week...and - whilst that meant we were “rich” of experience and know-how - it left us short of penetrative bowling and athleticism.
Having lost the toss and been invited to bowl, it began gloriously...as Phil “opera” Brown produced a middle-stump Yorker with the first ball of the match. Phil’s certainty of line married nicely with the excellent debut spell of Thomas Dalgas...and Chorleywood were quickly 40-odd for three. But the good news was suspended there...and no further wicket fell for another couple of hours.
There were positives, of course. Alec Clarke kept wicket with great enthusiasm and produced some lovely takes. He (and fellow colt Thomas D) could have done no more. Steve Potts reeled off his full 8 overs with metronomic excellence and economy. Beyond the full-time bowlers there was a substantial “chorus”of part-timers pleasingly willing to fill the gaps. Nobody let themselves down. Quite the opposite. But our wicket-taking potential always seemed limited...and - until a late flurry of wickets - we were essentially “containing”for the duration.
In reply...things might have been different had Matt Dale not been triggered after a positive start...or if Puds hadn’t defied physics with an impossible deflection onto his own stumps...or - especially - if Tim B (who absolutely nailed 2 or 3 quite glorious straight drives) hadn’t inexplicably lost his bearings and missed a nicely-flighted spinner.
Once those three were out, an “improbable” chase melted into an impossibility. The principle beneficiary of this was Peter D who was - for the second week running - permitted to enjoy a pressure-free net and made it his business to clock-up an average-enhancing “not out”!
In the end, we pulled up about 80 short...but we banked a few bonus points, we played some decent, purposeful cricket, we enjoyed each other's company and we appreciated some very pleasant opponents.
The firsts won...and the bar was full! What's not to like?!”
